First off, by having a canon, everyone can share the enjoyment of an entertainment
Secondly, making stuff up is more difficult for a lot of people, otherwise there would be no point in entertainment media to begin with if we could just use our own imagination.
Third, it is connected to the proper discussion after all, even if the motivation is a perverted one
Fourth, there would be no point in fantasising about a fictional character, if we were to just shape them into whatever we want in our minds.(i know many people do this, even though i can't understand why.)
