Start with that, combine the age old "Comics are for kids, what are you talking about?" attitude, and throw in all the murder mystery and horror comics that publishers like EC put out, and you have a mass hysteria leading to a senate hearing.
This caused the Comics Code Authority to be born, and for anything other than Superheroes, Archie, and Disney comics to be stamped out until the CCA was just ignored in the mid 70s, iirc.
Then it didn't get much better until more independent publishers like Dark Horse and Image got started, and only in the last decade or so has it really been getting better.
