It was not about where everything comes from, but rather about how their beliefs didn't let him enjoy his works.
GRRM did a better job at making a world that had very little to do with deities (making them plausible, but not revealing if they exist or not at all, similar to how many people irl feel about God). To GRRM, gods are just cultural aspects and that's a good thing, not many use that idea regarding divinity in fantasy settings. But every single time you see an atheist writing, it feels like the writer focus on single subject and never bothers to expand their world. That Subject is God, that's it.
No creativity at all, Pullman is terrible because of that. His world is plain and simple, which wouldn't really be that bad if it wasn't because he is trying to tackle a universal subject such as divinity. Seen better stuff than his in shit like Dragon Age or TES.
