>>96757961I disagree, I thought each one of Diana's Wannabe Commandos got one good scene in that helps lift the movie, and Diana's own personal growth. The slick Arab added a lot of mush-needed charm and energy to the team, and had that "racism sucks" line, which I think was, if not vital, then an important reminder for Diana that Man's World has it's fair share of problems.
Scots guy was underused, especially seeing as how he doesn't snipe anything, but his inclusion was worth it for Diana's line about "We need you, who else will sing for us?" That's one of Diana's best character moments in the film, as far as I'm concerned. It's a flash of Wondy's universal kindness, one of her defining character traits. A sweet, understated moment.
The Injun had a boring actor and none of Benny the Arab's pizzazz, but he had the line about "Oh yeah, Trevor's White People Suck" which, like Benny the Arab, invokes how much Man's World sucks, but vitally, it adds a layer of depth to Diana's relationship with Steve Trevor that I really appreciated. Just a hint -- it's never really followed up, but I really think the movie would have been lesser if it didn't broach those ideas. It adds another dimension to Diana that you can sit back and appreciate after the CGI final battle ends.
Now TFA's Howling Commandos, they were fun, but they definitely felt like they "had to be there." They're just a comic-book easter egg as a backdrop. They weren't bad, not by a long shot, but they didn't add to Cap's character like Bucky or Peggy does, and therefore don't add to his character in the same way Diana's 3 buddies added to her character. You take out the PTSD Scotsman or make the bad actor not an Injun, and you would significantly reduce Diana's story. You swap the howling commandos for a bunch of random soldiers that point the way to Bucky, and you'd lose nothing from Cap's story.
