Personally, I look at this show as more of a slice of life comedy than story driven. I remember a common complaint about Steven Universe was it having no identity. One second it was slice of life, the other it was a serious heavy plot ridden show. I started watching this show right around T.K.O. (that was the first one I watched as it premiered) and a couple other prior to that. I just fell in love with the show based on the few things I had seen. It's easy to just jump into this show because of its tone. The humor and characters are something I like a lot in of itself, and I think it's shown in the Captain Planet episode nicely. It does have some level of plot to it, but it's nowhere near the level of SU's which is commonly the entire Earth's destruction. All "catastrophic" events are contained to a single plaza, the main villain has no intentions beyond that, T.K.O. only destroyed the plaza etc. I do agree that the sandwhich gag has gone on long enough, however. Hopefully it's revealed soon. However, you're of course entitled to your opinion, but I have to disagree.
