I'm sad that after the first few episodes they broke so many of their own storytelling rules that it didn't even feel like the same show. Tons of wasted time, useless dialogue, romantic comedy banter played strictly for humor without advancing either character (WHY), and straight up waste of time shit like the episode where ashi just gets the events of the previous show parroted back to her by the people jack has saved. The things it did well were not the things the original series did well. the problems it had were not the problems the original series had. It felt like a weird sequel series, and all i wanted was a natural continuation and conclusion to the series we already had.
i'm also pretty butthurt that we never got the movie now, because it would likely just be a single adventure that ends with jack actually succeeding in getting back to the past. And that's really all i wanted, and all i hoped for. Just a series of 22 minute adventures, and then the Samurai returning home in a two parter or something. Instead, Genndy got way too big for his britches and tried to fit a complex storyline about Jack falling in love with another wounded warrior that would take like 20 episodes into half that all so he could have some crazy gainax ending. Fuck, imagine if the audience actually gave a shit about Ashi. The ending could have been ok. fuck.
