he has been crippeld before.
even gordon shot his kneecaps out once. and a while later joker was just fine and running around again (of course that is more the writers being to blame. because it's easier to just keep using joker. then to come up with a better villian to replace him)

Batman isn't responsible for someone else's actions.

Why is it casuals only blame Batman for this? Why is he somehow the only person who could possibly kill the Joker? Why don't you blame the people of New Jersey for not campaigning to get this guy the death penalty? Why don't you blame the judges and juries who let him get off with an insanity plea? Why don't you blame the psychologists who continue to falsely tell people that he's not in control of his actions? Why don't you blame Arkham Asylum's security for failing to keep him contained?

It seems more like the only person in this entire equation who's actually doing his job is Batman, who successfully turns in the Joker while also defending his right as an American citizen to a fair trial. Batman offers Joker up on a silver platter to the legal system and the people of Gotham and the great state of New Jersey, they drop the ball on all of their duties and responsibilities, and somehow this is Batman's fault?

Which would revert because people don't like Bruce out of the cowl forever. Maybe for a little while like in Morrison's run, but not permanently.
Face it, fans complain about change but not enough of them want it to actually stick.

Also Bruce being crazy enough to unravel at murder and go on a rampage is legit. The man planned ways to take out every person he knows, ways that could easily be tweaked to be fatal. He also created Brother Eye, used Venom in the past, and has shown that at times that one of only things keeping him from murdering every one of his rogues is Jim would hunt his ass down with or without the league's help. He has even tempted his friends to kill and offered to look the other way.

Because there's no point in that.

If you don't want superhero genre conventions, don't read superhero comics.

You can't have a shared ongoing universe where anything is allowed to happen, or else you end up with the shitheap the Ultimate line became.

If you're gonna do a "realistic" superhero story, it has to have a direction and an ending in mind. All the status quo rules and storytelling conventions people bitch about, such as the Joker not being able to die, were created BECAUSE you need rules in a shared universe with no ending.

This was literally the entire point of Watchmen.

Ultimate didn't become shit because it allowed for things to happen.
It became shit because it was written like shit.
