Alright, I saw the first episode. It's not as bad as it could be, but not as good as I hoped. The voice acting is clunky but I got used to it after a few lines. The writing can be pretty funny, but it's worrying that I can't always figure when it's on purpose or not. The animation is pretty poor, but the setting is cute and endearing.
Probably the largest flaw within this first episode is how self contained it is. We're presented Kaz and his goal (stopping being lovesick), and by the end of it he defeats his rival, gets the first rank,
and hooks up with a new girl. I hoped the last scene would be some kind of hook for the next episode, but nope, Kaz got all his problems fixed in the first episode. Obviously more shit is going to arise, but if I didn't already decide to watch the second episode because I promised myself I would do it before the series even came out I wouldn't feel compelled at all.
Kaz is endearing, but shallow. Everything he says and does seems like it came out of Jaiden's twitter account, so the casting is apt at least. I actually had a laff when I discovered he built his own grave and goes there when sad.
However, nobody ever calls him on his shit. I'd expect that at least the old man at the cemetery would call him out, and he does get upset a bit, but that shit is weak man. To write well you need to crank up the conflict to eleven, not have people be mildly upset at your character as he defeats every problem thrown in his way without breaking much of a sweat.
