Its a great meditation on both nostalgia for Canada's past as well as the loneliness of a middle-aged women- she realizes she's effectively becoming a cat lady and hates herself for it. She ends up in a weird symbiotic relationship with the bear because its the only male force in her life that's not trying to exploit her for quick sex, and ironically that causes her to lust for it. Over time she keeps trying to provoke the bear into more and more sexual acts, but it never ends up mounting her- instead it freaks out and claws the fuck out of her back instead. Only when she is bleeding out, naked on the floor does she realize how fucking bonkers her actions have been. Though she says goodbye to the bear on a bittersweet note, it creates a resolve to examine her life and rebuild it into one where she respects herself even without degrading one-night stands.
The prose was beautiful. It deserves every award it got.
