They've said they're working on a relatively realistic sci-fi movie, that will be interesting.
They've also discussed a traditionally animated film for a long time and it would be amazing for one to get a wide release again

While I don't want to put Laika in a box, it is worth noting that they are know more widely than not for their special type of animation and the care they put into it.
They could differ from stop-motion, but I feel unless it's a damn good film, it'll put off a lot of people.
That being said, you are absolutely right about it being nice to have a 2D renaissance.

It depresses me that Laika has such an incredibly strong sense of artistic integrity and yet their movies almost always under perform. With the amount of love and craft they put into what they do they deserve to be pulling Pixar numbers but most times they're lucky if they break even.

They don't spend hundreds of millions on marketing like Disney, and they don't have the same following. If they continue to make great works as they do, they should gain a stronger following.

As far as I understood, Laika films always do extremely well in home release relative to their cinematic release.

Like who? And why? I don't mean to dismiss your assertion, but I just don't see it. When I think of Laika fans, especially the ones that I know, I imagine they appreciate the stopmotion but would also be thrilled to see some traditional animation coming out. I don't think die hard stopmotion fans who aren't interested in 2d at all would be a very big niche. One of the few advantages I can see them losing is with the normies and children that mistake Laika's stuff for CG, but I don't think of them as being loyal to the particular studio.

I hate to admit that some of Kubo's scenes were so fucking smooth that I mistook them for CGI. The moon beast flying in the sky, the fortress rising from the water and unfolding. It all looked amazing. Maybe I am getting old.

At the box office it made $15m over budget. It'll do nicely in the home video market. Generally Laika just put all of the revenue towards their next film.

A general rule is that a film needs to gross twice it's budget to break even. If it only made 15 million more than its budget it probably lost money.

They'll hire more animators and expand their studio. They might create a new animation wing but for traditional animation. I get the feeling Travis Knight isn't a huge fan of CGI because it's too clinical. It cheapens the experience which is something he wants to avoid.

I feel like they should be the modern Pixar. Maybe if their storytelling felt closer to the audiences they could achieve it. I'm not saying the plots in their movies are bad, but I feel they lack a way to connect with the audience (which is something that Pixar manages to do in most of their movies, even if they aren't that great.)
