Carol Danvers has no set supporting cast, tone, or distinct atmosphere. The fact that the Kree/Skrull war is the basis for her film says a lot. It's a great move to bring in Skrulls, but I don't think Carol will have legs for an entire franchise, especially if she's jumping 20 years to the present after this.

If someone says "Rogue is my favorite super heroine!" You don't question it. Even if you don't like her, you can understand why others do.

With Carol? "Carol Danvers is my favorite super heroine!" Is a statement that leads to all sorts of follow up questions. "Why?" being the chief among them.

I mean, Carol barely even has her own villains.

Skrulls will always be associated more with the Fantastic Four. Followed by The Marvel Universe as a whole. And then Carol specifically.
Brood were always done better in X-Men comics.
Alcholism has a more intimate relationship with Tony Stark and Emma Frost.
Mystique is forever an X-Men villain and occasional ally above anything Carol related.
And as far as Rogue goes...I don't like speaking for the majority, but I'm almost 100% certain that most would be content if Rogue just drank Carol to death, since she puts Carol's powers to better use than Carol does.

All Carol genuinely has is a woman who made a better Ms. Marvel than she did, and a "Son" that raped her and impregnated her with himself.

Carol is like Wonder Man. She can be wonderful on a team book, but holy shit she can not stand on her own two feet as a character. Because she has nothing that you can't get from other heroines, while those are heroines have more to give in addition.

The change to angry flat chested bulldyke didn't help either. Because at least before her blandness wasn't as obvious given how gorgeous and curvaceous she used to be. Now there's nothing to distract from how awful she is.

A while back Rogue was tricked into joining the Brotherhood and used by Mystique to drain Carol.

Rogue held onto Carol so long that she gained a permanent power boost, and it ended up putting Carol into a coma a good long while.
That's why, for the longest time, Rogue had super strength/durability and could fly as part of her normal power kit. Rogue absorbed Carol so hard that she basically became a kree hybrid herself, sans the energy powers.

Carol will probably fight Skrulls then maybe spends the 90's to 2010's taking over the Kree Empire and restructuring it.

Hell she probably had to do with Xandar and the Kree making nice with each other.

Maybe im Avengers 4 she comes back with a fleet of Kree fighters to help against Thanos.

No, a legitimately serious coma that ate away a significant chunk of her life and caused her to hold a lifelong grudge against Rogue.

Carol at the time was more or less a useless character nobody gave a shit about, and X-Men were at the height of popularity, so they used her as an excuse to buff up Rogue, who was a fan favorite.

Marvel has tended to like for their villain in origin movies to have similarities to the hero. How do you guys think the villain(s) will be similar to Captain Marvel?

MCU villains replicate the power set of the heroes (since in some cases like the Red Skull their powers predate the hero's) but rather that every MCU villain so far has been a dark foil for their character.

Stane not only has another suit: where Tony is a naive war profiteer, Stane is an unabashed "war monger."

Blonksy chooses to undergo the same process that accidentally created the Hulk, seduced by the allure of power rather than the promise of scientific discovery.

Whiplash is Tony Stark in all but name: the son of a brilliant physicist and engineer who feels he should have the fame and influence of Stark himself. Raised in squalor and resentment rather than monied entitlement.

Loki is a classic Shakespearean foil. The lesser brother, perhaps more suited to the throne, but ultimately lacking the traits that make his brother Thor worthy. He is the cunning Iago to Thor's capable but somewhat blind Othello.

The Red Skull injects himself with Erskine's formula for selfish ends and to serve his own quest for power. As Erskine says, the serum magnifies what is already there. For Schmidt it reifies and subverts his delusions of superhumanity by figuratively turning him inside out, revealing how fundamentally flawed his ethos is. For Steve it perfects the outside, reflecting the inner strength he had always shown.

The Avengers have several villains, each a foil unto themselves: Loki, who wishes to enslave humanity and use his influence to rule rather than serve and inspire; the Chitauri, mindless pawns driven by a primal hive mind rather than a team of individuals forged by a single ethos; and,

I would suggest (especially given the direction the MCU takes in Phase 2) the World Security Council (or whatever that body is called) who seeks to neutralize the threat of the Chitauri regardless of collateral damage.

Aldrich Killian follows the essentially corrupt industrialist model set by Stane and Hammer, but he is also a direct response to Tony's pre-Iron Man disdain for humanity, a trait which his arc as Iron Man largely seeks to reverse. The Mandarin at the same time presents a dark reflection of Iron Man who, after the events at the end of Avengers has become well acquainted with the truth that he is not a superpowered soldier or a God from another dimension, but a man in a metal suit. Likewise, the Mandarin turns out to be nothing more than a man in a costume. The difference being that when stripped of the costume Tony shows his true abilities -- the "genius" part of "genius, millionaire, playboy, philanthropist."

Malekith is an albeit shallow foil who is simply driven to plunge the realms into darkness while Thor has pledged to protect them. He's really more of a foil for Odin, I think, than for Thor which is one of the reasons this movie is usually castigated as one of the MCU's worst.

Winter Soldier is an obviously dark reflection of Cap. He is the Cold War paranoia to Cap's WWII optimism, the assassin rather than the soldier, the whispered fear and not the glorified icon. But more personally, whereas Cap is driven by the memories of the world he lost in the ice, the common decency of which he often fights to reassert in the face of globalized corruption, Bucky is constantly the blank slate, the pawn motivated only by the whim of his governmental overlords.

Ronan is the Accuser, a zealot and warlord who champions the superiority of the Kree; a manifestation of imperial power. He is one of their proudest warriors, an exemplar Kree. Finally, whereas Scott is a moral thief, Cross is an immoral (but, in a subversion of the trope) an otherwise above-board businessman. Scott steals and is then given Pym Particles and the harness of the Ant-Man; Cross is denied the technology, but creates and perfects his own version of the same. There is also the parallel of the father winning the love of a child who has been denied him and the son denying the legacy of the father who spurned him.

Zemo is the dual embodiment of what both Cap and Tony each are struggling against in Civil War. He is the inevitable consequences of adventuring which Iron Man asserts throughout the film, and also the inevitable conclusion of the fundamental contradiction of Cap in the 21st century: the image of morally just Americanism in an age of moral relativism.

Kaecilius is another obvious foil, the talented but ultimately disenfranchised student who exposes the fraud at the heart of the mission. Strange, on the other hand, embraces the fraud as a tool to win the day, which drives the wedge between him and his other main foil, Mordo.

Whereas Peter looks to the sky as is inspired to fulfill the example of the Avengers in his own way, Toomes looks to the sky and feels small. Peter gets powers that he doesn't ask for while Toomes is left naturally powerless. Peter uses his own ingenuity to build web shooters while Toomes scavenges Chitauri tech to give himself his abilities. Finally, if Spider-Man is the result of great power tempered with great responsibility to the public good, the Vulture here is framed as the assertion of the principles of will to power and the application thereof for personal aggrandizement.

That was actually a good backstory for Carol as well. You got the feeling she never got over being eaten up by Rogue and it permanently damaged her psyche. It's a good excuse to give her a bit of a darker side and make her interesting.

But that was all forgotten about after they made her into the most boring tumblr-tier cat-lady superhero for whom the stakes are always pretty low.

I really hope they manage to find a way to use her and do her justice. Make her a Hydra super soldier code-named Arachne and give her Black Widow's gauntlets as a substitute for her venom blasts. I suppose the issue is more how irrelevent the incident in question was at the time.
mar-vel was fighting some alien mad scientist. mid-fight he got knocked flying ito carol, and they both collided with a kree gene manipulator. no one at the time realized it caused Carol to become half-kree. Mar-Vel just got up and kept fighting. it was IRL months later when the writers even decided that Carol got powers from the incident.
it was an accident that completely redefined her life out in and of itself has no gravitas as an origin story. a completely meaningless incident that happened as a background event in someone else's story that is really hard to twist into having any kind of thematic point beyond 'shit happens ¯\_(?)_/¯'

Whoops. Not sure how I remembered that wrong. Kind of weird that she hasn't gotten a promotion for all the stuff she's been doing all this time. Marvel had been noticeable cutting back on villain murdering. Homecoming and Civil War kept the major antagonists. Sorry about Crossbones but he wasn't a long term villain. With Strange we have Kaecilius losing his humanity, but that isn't actually a death and he can potentially return.

Basically Marvel is deliberately keeping most villains alive now.

GotG2 went with the scrapped storyline where Peter Quill's father was a cosmic being

There was a scrapped storyline about the Kree Supreme Intelligence wanting to use Carol as a basis for a legion of Kree/Human Hybrids he intended on unlocking the Destiny Force in. I can see them going with something similar and replacing the Destiny Force with Carol's Binary form.

side note: this storyline being scrapped is what lead to the kerfuffle of a rapist using Carol's womb as a portal. She was originally meant to have been zapped pregnant by the SupInt and pregnant with one of these New-Kree supersoldiers. I imagine if that storyline does get used, they'll just have them be test-tube babies on the big screen to sanitize the whole 'impregnated without your knowledge' aspect

Earth has enough problems with the few hundred skrulls, the Inhumans who are quasi-Kree citizens, half dozen Kree soldiers, the extended family of the worst Shi'Ar emperor in history, the assassin of the last Empress, the ex lover of the same empress, whole teams of Shi'Ar fugitives, living on it together.
