As for freezing the bolt, technically we have seen characters "freezing" objects and even people the way Kylo did before TFA. Even Anakin does to Bariss at the end of their fight in TCW.

TFA, contrary to what its title suggests, didn't really introduce and new uses of the Force. Just gave more exposure to lesser-explored ones.

Yeah, if you're up for reading some books, Lords of the Sith and Tarkin are pretty good. They're not directly after ROTS, but they do show a lot of early-Empire stuff.

I really hate what TCW did with Maul. Robot legs and kinda going insane. So lame. I like Witwer but his maul voice just sounds like a guy trying as hard as possible to be edgy. The TPM maul was quiet and stoic and dangerous like a panther, the new maul is like an emo school shooter.

He never should have come back, bad decision by Lucas

Witwer has a lot of more subtle and restrained dialogue that sounds exactly like TPM Maul though.

It's just that unlike in TPM, Maul has since been put in positions where he actually has to emote against his enemies. He's no longer just an assassin, he is on a personal vendetta and revenge mission.

TCW actually took great care in recapturing Maul's subtleties in TPM. They even made sure to give him his snarls and little growls, keeping him a very threatening and animalistic character.

Maul always feels like a predator, and that's why he works so well.

TCW has the added bonus of actually showing the extent of Maul's intelligence. He clearly has been trained well, manipulating and uniting the criminal underworld, and he remains very calm and stoic there.

As for Mauls sanity, it was basically in flux. When we first find him in TCW, he is batshit insane, understandably. Mother Talzin restored his sanity, and for the remainder of TCW he is a very intelligent and nihilistic threat. Only against Obi-Wan does he ever truly lose his shit. Then Rebels is, again justifiably, where his sanity starts to waver, and you can see just how bad the life of a Sith has left him.

Also TCW gave us some of the best Maul encounters, like his execution of Pre Visla. 10/10 episode, that.

Also I completely disagree. He came back because he had a story worth telling, one that gave us a compelling and emotional arc for Obi-Wan, Satine, and Maul.

And it paid off beautifully. Some of the best animation and voice work ever displayed in TCW, and the closure in Rebels was absolutely beautiful.

The decision to bring Maul back absolutely did what Lucas intended, to tell a story that was unfortunately missing from the movies, and add to the characters of Obi-Wan and Maul in a way that permanently improved their legacies in the franchise.

However controversial the decision originally was, I think the execution and final result shows that it was completely justified, and a success.

Maul shouldn't be put in situations where he has to emote though, it's just doesn't suit him at all. Maul also doesn't need to be shown to be smart, you get a real sense of his physical intelligence from TPM and you don't really need much more than that.

Also the whole Maul plotline is also something is dislike about TCW, the EU and Star Wars as a whole: When there's ONE cool thing - like Maul or Boba, there HAS to be a WHOLE PLANET of those cool things. There has to be loads of other maul looking guys running around, and he needs a brother whos bigger and stronger than him and also has a lightsaber!!!11.

It bugs me, why can't maul just be a cool quiet, threatening villain who died after underestimating his young jedi opponent who had just lost their master? That's a good story by itself and it doesn't need expanding upon.

Han Solo is such well known and beloved character it’s easy to see why Lucasfilm / Dinsey wanted to make a young solo movie about him. However, he’s almost too well known and beloved to do anything interesting with. If you push too far and do something that the public and fans doesn’t consider ‘Han-solo-y’ enough with his character you risk alienating and angering your audience, so it makes sense to play it safe - character-wise. On the flip side however, if you stick only to what we already know and love about Han, you also run the risk of ‘flanderising’ his character and making him incredibly one-dimensional. I think this is a major problem and the movie will suffer for it.

A young Lando movie would have made a lot more sense story and character-wise. He has a lot more freedom and a lot of hinted-at but un-shown backstory to explore - and he’s not soo incredibly popular that you can’t do risky and interesting things with the character. Have him meet with Lobot perhaps, who maybe only has one half of his cyborg implants so he’s a lot more human or something. Have Lando bang an alien queen and piss off the locals and have to make an escape. Have something surprising and interesting about the character revealed that adds more depth to his actions in ESB.

In regards to Boba (and believe me, I am no Bobafag), there was ALWAYS going to be a planet of Mandalorians. He was described, even in the earliest stages of production, as being a Bounty Hunter who wears Mandalorian Supercommando armor.

His armor was never supposed to be 1-of-a-kind. Lucas got around this by explaining that Boba isn't even a Mandalorian, so technically Boba is still unique, the Mandalorians were always supposed to be a separate faction unrelated to him. And yeah, I know, the Clones.

This was all explained in the show though. It's not that they pulled it out of their ass.

The arc was cleverly constructed so that it could be used as a platform for Ventress to go off on her own. Then Dooku needs a replacement, and they used the introduction of a new villain character as the launchpad to work Maul into the story. Then making Maul come from a tribal family is a no-brainer, just look at the guy.

It was all very fluid and thought-out well. And Maul's relationship with his brother is frankly one of my favorite parts about the character now. It's incredibly subtle throughout the show, and yet it's undeniable that Maul actually did care about Savage. Especially when you see Maul in Rebels.

Also the fight against Sheev is one of the best high-stakes fights in the entire franchise. The visuals were top notch, as was Sheev's cackling, the TPM pottery, and we had no idea if Maul was going to survive the Sheevening.

My only regret is that Son of Dathomir never got animated. Maul confronting Greivous and Dooku personally would have been fucking amazing to see on screen.

Han Solo works well in a larger universe. For all his comic was enjoyable and well-executed, I find it's a struggle for him to hold the focus of a story on his own compared to, say Leia or Ahsoka.

I'd also unironically flip out with delight if they announced a Lando story.

Not true.

The description was that he wore the armor of a group that the Jedi fought during the Clone Wars.

The rest of it was EU. Mandalorians for example first appeared in the Marvel Comics.

The reason the Han Solo movie is happening is because it was Lucas's idea.

Lucasfilm hold that man rightfully in a very high regard.

Lucas was sitting on a Han Solo backstory for years, and he finally wanted to have it made, and on the big screen no less. Before it was floating around as cut content from RotS, and a potential story in the live action tv show that never happened.

So yeah, it might currently feel like a safe-but-limiting idea for a movie, but Lucasfilm clearly has faith that Lucas's Han Solo story is one worth telling. I think that's worth giving the movie a chance.

I think the problem is that while you are trying to justify individual plot points, I on the other hand fundamentally disagree with bringing maul back from the dead and fundamentally disagree with how maul developed as a character - which means we're probably never going to agree

Maul becoming a chatterbox was understandable, but he just went over the top at times. He really should've died not long after RotS. I really didn't like the way he became THAT desperate, especially when trying to recruit someone like Ezra and still trying to get revenge after all that time.

Also his revenge plan, at least on Malachor, was really solid. He was obsessed on finding an apprentice because that was the Sith philosophy ingrained in him. He was even stuck on Malachor for fuck knows how long, unable to progress to the Sith weapon BECAUSE he no longer had an apprentice.

All he would be able to think about in this time is how Sheev took Savage from him. And then Ezra comes along.

Not in the slightest, I don't know how you came to that conclusion, especially following the development he had with Savage in TCW.

Anyways, the most significant bit of character development for Maul comes from his dying words. He wasn't screaming, or spitting, or crying about not having an apprentice. He made his mark and took solace in the survival and strengths of men stronger than him. I thought it was very fitting, and showed that Maul wasn't just obsessed with one single thing.

They're moving through ANH->ESB very slowly because they don't really want things to turn into a clusterfuck. I personally don't mind it, we'll get to different time periods eventually, and there are sill comics like Vader, Maul and Windu to fill out other era's too.

Also worth mentioning that we are in the ANH 40th anniversary year, so we're getting more ANH-centric stories than usual.

Holy fuck that Vader issue just basically set up Luke and possibly even Rey's Jedi Orders. If ther are tons of Barash Jedi around the galaxy it's very likely that Luke, and later Rey would find some who were willing to untake their Barash vow and join a formal Jedi Order again. Not only that but it doesn't really fuck with Luke's purpose since these Barash Jedi just studied the force instead of using it for diplomacy like Luke had to do to save the galaxy.

So we have some leaked info about Viscerals 2018 Star Wars game, and it seems... Interesting.

The most notable bits of info;

>You play as an Alderaanian refugee named Dodger
>The story is "movie-quality", like BF2 they want all their Vidya to be as valid as if you was experiencing a playable Star Wars movie
>Comparable to Rogue One, the story is set in the lead-up to Empire Strikes Back
>He is an Outlaw/Bounty Hunter working for Jabba the Hutt on Tatooine while evading the Empire
>Dodger is trying to earn money to get off the Empire's Alderaan Wanted list
>Dodger uncovers evidence about the Empire building another superweapon that could cause similar destruction to what happened to Alderaan. (DSII?)
>Game is third person, with Dodger primarily using Blaster Pistols
>Dodger also uses his own Zygerrian-style lightwhip. that attack his enemies

Thoughts? I have mixed feelings. Lightwhip gameplay sounds like it could be fun, and I like the idea of doing jobs for Jabba, hopefully it will have some Bounty Hunter vibes.

But the premise of it being set (partially, at least) on Tatooine pre-ESB is honestly so tired and boring to me now.

Well it's partially because he was living on a pro-Empire planet that had mandatory conscription to the Empire, and against the wishes of his family, he bailed.

That's why he is called "Dodger", it's not his real name.

As for Alderaan, I think the Leia comic actually went into this. The Empire was arresting anybody from Alderaan due to the connection the planet had in aiding the Rebellion. So Dodger being alive and present on a Imperial watchlist actually does make sense, as to why he is on the run from the Empire.

Thanks for the storytimes anon. That was one of the better Poe issues, too.

I hope we can keep storytimes in this General like we used to. I have no idea why people decided to take them to separate threads in the first place. All it did was kill discussion by splitting up all our posters, and mean people would miss the comics. We have this Star Wars General for a reason and I think we've managed perfectly fine with three storytimes in this thread, and we're barely 1/3rd to the bump limit

Turns out Battlefront 2 is actually going to be good. Tons of TCW shit in it, including all the relevant voice actors.

Han Solo movie lost its directors in a worrying "creative differences" situation. Word on the street is that the movie is basically a fucking comedy with little-to-no good action sequences, and Kathleen is worried that it would never be accepted and respected the way Rogue One was.

The comics lately have been really fucking solid, I personally loved all three that were storytimed this thread.

Ashley Eckstein and Matt Lanter have been recording lines together, leading fans to speculate Ahsoka and Anakin could be appearing in more than just Force of Destiny. Possibly for Filoni's next project, or upcoming free Battlefront 2 DLC.

I relate to this so much. I'm exactly like this, when I get obsessed with something, I tend to lose interest in everything else. I've been doing nothing but reading Star Wars comics and shitposting on /swco/ lately, but a couple of months ago I was obsessed with another thing and hanging out in completely different threads, and I'm sure in a few months I'll probably move on to something else. But I'll definitely be back here once Rebels S4/BF2/TLJ will be out.

I think using Ezra was always a bad play. You have Jai Kell and Hedala Fardi and a bunch of other force sensitives attached to Rebels in that age range who are doing fuck and all. If you want to give Maul an apprentice, have it be someone who's actually with him. Him using Ezra is just weird because it's obvious Ezra has no intention of being an apprentice or learning anything from him.

Not to mention a lack of saber characters and duels being a big fault of season 3. People bitch about inquisitors sometimes but they did their job and there's a big hole in the plot now that they're gone.

It's a species from the old EU books.

The basic summary is: They are a species from beyond the known galaxy that hate technology and have an immunity to the force. they operate in giant organic space ships and declared war on the republic, killing trillions in a massive conflict. In the EU it was also said that the Vong were one of the reasons Sheev created the empire. He wanted to build up the galaxies armed forces before the Vong hit.

The story line actually started out promising, but like a lot of EU content, it really lost its ground and slowly became stale. Filoni was planning to revive the Vong on a much smaller scale in TCW, but the show was cancelled before they had a chance to animate the story line.

I agree, Luceno did justice in the end, but the Vong arc had gone to complete shit before The Unifying Force. The story line had so much potential to be something more, but it just got dragged out, like most other story lines in the New Jedi Order series.

I always thought that the Vong invasion should have been a 3 or 4 parter, like the Thrawn Trilogy. It just doesn't work when you drag it out and insert it into so many different books with different story lines. Sometimes, less is more.

If kids can read a 850 page Harry Potter book (I'm pretty sure the last 4 are all over 650 pages but I can't bother to check) in one night, they can read a Star Wars book of similar length. It'd probably be less intimidating than 21 medium sized books anyway.

This pissed me off at first but then I thought about it and honestly I'll give it a pass. Vader is difficult enough to emote without having him talk in the films, and scenes where we're conveyed information about what he's thinking without him saying it (like when he decided to save Luke at the end of Jedi) were portrayed through editing, not framing or composition.

And getting that all across in a comic panel would be even harder. So I don't think that this is Vader's mask literally moving to show an expression, but just a way to show it to the reader, kinda like how characters in comics can't see speech or thought bubbles while we can.

It's dumb looking, but necessary.

I don't mind it. the expression isn't so extreme that I can't imagine it's just a trick of the angle.

That said, Vader being hard to read is a pretty important part of his character and I think it makes the few times he does get to display emotion more impactful.

eh I doubt that's true. If you're in the process of a messy divorce your first thought isn't to find a new wife. They were in the process of getting fired from a movie after working on it since 2015 and filming since January of this year, with 3 weeks left in production. There's no way they'd immediately jump ship and join another major franchise, especially since Warner Bros hasn't exactly been good when it comes to letting the directors of DCEU films make the films they want. Wonder Woman might have been a change for them, but keep in mind Justice League has been in production at the same time Wonder Woman was, and we don't know how hectic the Snyder/Whedon transition really was behind the scenes.

Lord & Miller probably won't be making another movie at least until after Han Solo is released, and isn't The Flash supposed to come out next year anyway? Whatever they do next is probably going to be smaller and something they can make without studio meddling. Even JJ hasn't announced a new film since TFA came out (although I think he's been producing a play) and we haven't heard peep from Gareth Edwards since Rogue One came out regarding what he plans on doing next. They're probably burned out and in Edwards case possibly disillusioned by big studios after the whole reshoot fiasco with Rogue One. I mean, wasn't Edwards basically fucking replaced by Tony Gilroy for those? I remember hearing Christopher McQuarrie was involved too, but I don't know if that was for rewrites or directing reshoots as well. Either way, I don't blame them for taking a break.

IMO Jared Harris looks like Sebastian Shaw enough that if George hadn't replaced Shaw with Hayden in the 2004 re-release then I'd be positive Harris would be cast to play Anakin's Force Ghost in the Sequel Trilogy should the script require it.

desu I'd prefer him as Anakin's Force Ghost in either TLJ or IX over Hayden. I know a lot of people here are happy with the special edition changes and I'll get shit on for thinking that but replacing Shaw with ROTS-era Hayden made absolutely no sense to me, even with Lucas and the Story Group's justification for it. It undermines the entire ending of Return of the Jedi as well as Anakin's entire character arc by saying he never redeemed himself and the last time he was "good" was when he looked like ROTS-era Anakin, which makes no sense because he was already on the path to the dark side in Attack of the Clones after killing all the Tusken Raider women and children.

Plus Vader's last words are literally him telling Luke that he was right about there still being good in his father. I don't know how that could mean anything else but that he redeemed himself by sacrificing himself to kill the Emperor and save his son.

While I love the Sebastian Shaw portrayal, narrative-wise, it's illogical. We are expected to believe that the Force renders the Chosen One upon his death to a version of Anakin that never existed? The Anakin that was left when Vader was redeemed at the end of ROTJ was a literally broken shell of a man, a quadruple amputee with barely functioning organs, skeletal system, and dermal tissues. It doesn't make sense to go from the big scarred horrifying Vader face reveal to some generic comfy friendly literal who grandpa. It ties in far better to show Anakin as he was known to his friends, family, and most important, the audience.

Him looking like Hayden makes the most sense because that's the last he remembers himself looking like. It's hard enough for them to manifest themselves at all visually. Honestly I feel like group-think and peer pressure is a big factor.

It became a sort of "necessity" to criticize Lucas during the mid 00's, so people try to hate on just about every little thing they can that isn't ANH/ESB. And even then you'll still get people insisting that the good stuff in the OT wasn't to Lucas's credit neither.

I remember when Ahsoka was revealed and everyone jumped down Lucas's neck, insisting that she was just another bad idea on the list of Lucas's bad ideas. I also remember TCW gettng tons of complaints with people insisting things like "it's just for toys", or "Lucas just wanted to work entirely with CGI hurrrrr", not realizing that the show was a wildly ambitious and expensive passion project.

And obviously it is fine to have an honest-to-god disagreement with Lucas, he isn't perfect and everyone is entitled to their opinion. But the mass hatred and nitpicking of every thing he did in the past couple decades is just petty and mindless.

I disagree - I think part of good storytelling is knowing restraint and letting things speak for themselves. More often than not it feels like we're being provided with an all-too convenient back story when we're told more about characters who were wrapped up in their original tale. I see it like this: characters are written, serve their purpose and are boxed off. Often a character will have extra facets hinted at within the storytelling and dialogue that would provide leads for the future, but many do not. They serve their purpose as characters within the context of the storyline and their thread ends. When a character who was boxed away without any leads comes back, it feels like the box is being unnecessarily opened.

I can see why you really like Maul and the show, and your points are well argued. I just can't get behind him coming back.

I know all this of course, I'm just saying its one of the more obvious examples. Most of the words could be functional translations. For example, Republic and Democracy, though Latin and Greek, merely mean "common thing" and "citizen power," so it's not hard to just use those as part of translation convention standins for whatever language they are meant to speak in a galaxy far far away. To get to Fascism however, you need to go to a very specific twentieth century militarist totalitarian ideology, the bastard-child Frankenstein combination of socialism and nationalism (national socialism), derived from a very specific Ancient Roman cultural element; the symbol of a Roman general's military authority, the bundle of sticks with an axe sticking out of it - the "fasces". This autism is what a political historian like me has to live with.

would you guys be upset if a film based off of the Thrawn Trilogy was announced, even if it meant that all of the actors from the OT would be recast?

I say 1 film because it would't work as a trilogy the same way the books did. They just wouldn't translate to film the same way, especially with the lack of a Dark Side villain, there'd be no lightsaber duels until the third film. One movie would make the most sense.
