Why is this such a common thing in cartoons? Is there an actual reason for it?

four fingers (three fingers and a thumb) is generally regarded as easier to draw, easier to animate, and less visually busy.

Originally, it was because it was just that much less work to animate and draw in old cartoons. Nowadays, it's just kind of tradition among a lot of cartoonists.

Because when you draw cartoons you exaggerate proportions. You make the head and hand bigger. The bigger you draw the hand the less fingers you can easily fit on it.

During a fourth wall break in Astro Boy, Osamu Tezuka speculated that three fingers look like four when in motion because of the difference between crisp drawings and blurry photographs. Plus all the other reasons here (I like >>92931339).
