Nah, Spidey's been the money maker for decades. Even before him entering the MCU you could see spider-man figures alongside Avengers toys on toy stores.

The X-Men actually have a lot of characters and story lines they can visit, where the Avengers are kind of a messy franchise. For example, all Avengers stuff these days usually have the movie six, and they act like the Hulk has always been there when he's been absence since issue 2 all the way til AvX. A lot of the Avengers stories are just taking other character's stories to slap them in haphazardly. And how many fucking times do we need Kang/a time travel arc to bring back the original Avengers costumes in the book? Like, why are the Avengers so obsessed with their 60's past?

That's only in the MCU. I think OP is talking about in general, out there in the mainstream. The X-Men aren't the giants they once were, but Spider-Man is still a big name in spite of how the MCU may be handling him.
