Some are so used to pomp and circumstance that deviation from it is confusing.
China throughout history used this as legitimate battle tactics. During one of their civil wars a mechanism was invented that could be put on a chariot which would automatically fire and reload arrows and was powered by the wheels. The general had the horses attached to the chariots lit on fire, and seeing chariots pulled by flaming shrieking horses and firing arrows with no humans aboard caused the entire army that outnumbered the Chinese loyalists to flee. During the opium wars, they dressed up monkeys like human skeletons then lit them on fire which caused the most elite troops the British had to flee.
An entire garrison of Nazi SS were forced out of a French town by one VERY pissed off and suicidal Canadian scout. He ran through the streets screaming, shooting, throwing grenades, and demanding surrender. They had no idea what to think of him, and ended up retreating out of fear at what the fuck he could do.
So yeah. Dumbshit distraction techniques actually work.
