Especially when you consider that of the community of Beach City, Lars is the only person that could be called an asshole. His parents are supportive, everyone he knows is polite, even the local cool kids are friendly with everyone. Lars is just an asshole in comparison.
And not even a more realistic "everyone is polite, so they must worship the ground underneath my feet" type of asshole. He's an asshole because he's self conscious. And when literally everyone else in town is amiable, supportive and friendly it starts becoming unrealistic.
