Actual discussion quickly devolves into shitfests since for the most part people want to just keep their own arguments, want to believe the other side have no arguments, and thus are ill prepared to represent their own.
Not to mention every discussion is subject to parroting on either side, and any controversial statement made here (at least in controversy to the general opinion on the board) is quickly dismissed as faulty and "being contrarian".
tl;dr We're all just here to meme and act ironically for the sake of it, but are for the most part self aware about it. Tumblr, in the non-satirical parts of its userbase, is not.
