His time at home prior to shit going down was kind of alright but his dad thought he was shit and his sister was a psycho. Pretty much main pro was his mom
All he did was speak out against his dad for sacrificing lives and had his face burnt, stripped of his home, and lost his mom as a result
then spent years on end out at sea to find the Avatar where nobody knew where in the world he was if anywhere
Pretty much the only positive he had during that time was Iroh
Everyone hates him for being the Prince of the Fire Nation when he tries to help and he is kind of fucked up in general during all that shit which leads to more problems for himself until he straightens up and fixes things at which point things get a lot better for him
However even after he becomes leader of Fire Nation and such he still has to deal with some more shit like his psychotic sister running around, his dad being a prick in jail, and then finding out his mother basically abandoned him / wiped her memories of him so she could fuck off with her old lover and basically sweep them under the rug in her life
He had it pretty rough although at a few points he did cause it himself (which he would rectify later)
