Even "homosexuality" (and "heterosexuality" by extension) didn't become legitimate titles or concepts until the last century or so within western culture.
People coming up with new terminology to describe their sexual preferences is typically just a way to try and be more specific about their tastes, since gay/bi/straight still leaves a lot up to interpretation.
I dunno. I get how it still comes off as "special snowflake" language, but it's not unreasonable to recognize the limitations of current sexual terminology and attempt to expand/adapt it.
