I'm not that convinced Chris will be screwed once Barb is gone.
By many accounts, Chris is actually pretty capable of being a functioning human. Or at least, capable of functioning for his own needs. He's capable of driving and gets around, he has a rudimentary knowledge of paying bills, his lack of social skills isn't so insane that he can't leave the house without getting arrested, etc. His hygiene is atrocious but it's not like his parents being around changed that.
Does he waste a ton of money on toys? Sure. But he genuinely seems smart enough to realize that if he needs $300 to keep the power on, he'll spend it on the power. Most of his frivolous spending seems to stem from the fact that all of his money is simply given to him. He's given quite a lot of money to his mother to help pay for these necessities.
His biggest flaws are his entitlement and general lack of self-preservation. If it happened that he didn't get his tugboat or dad's pension or whatever, he'd be in trouble re: getting a job. He's had plenty of embarrassing moments in public, but only a few that were actually criminal in nature. That being said, if he did get arrested, he really wouldn't have anybody to help or support him. His health is an entirely different matter, but there are plenty of people with jobs that smoke and drink and eat junk, so y'know.
Someone from his church might be his support system, but they would most likely push the things he's resisted on him: getting a job or some better purpose for the community, taking care of himself better, and trying not to be so selfish.
In short, as long as he keeps getting free money, and doesn't have a Synder moment in public, he'll be fine. But he's nothing if not unpredictable, so only time can tell.
