The worst part is that he doesn't even try. It would be better if he went to class and tried to grok the lesson but failed, perhaps lying to Dorothy about doing better. THEN skipping class again would be fine, since he'd still see himself as a failure.

There's no body language, it's literally just a face talking in each panel. Also it's faces talking with just teeth, and that's irritating to look at.

Willis tried to make it seem that way when the math stuff was revealed, but there's no basis. Dorothy initially thought Walky was an idiot, and was still fine interacting with him because of the emotional support.

His school smarts were never part of his attractiveness to Dorothy. Their shared interests, Walky's emotional support, his availability as someone to hang out and goof off with, and his hot bod, are why she likes him.

And yeah, I think this is a pretty shitty thing for Walky to do after they had that heartfelt reveal. I can get that it may be hard, but there's been no focus on Walky's indecision or trepidation, he just skipped as soon the idea was brought up, seemingly out of nowhere. This makes it feel like yesterday's strips just didn't matter to him at all.

Willis could've really improved this by just showing Walky's indecision before hand.

Isn't that kind of the point? I mean, IT's clear Walky's own insecurity was making him thing his incompetence would made Dorothy leave him, but how she reacted to learning that pretty much confirmed that it was all Walky's crazy scenario.

I have been in Walky's place to. To actually face hardship for the first time, way later than any other and not actually know if your hard work will actually make you succeed is all pushing you toward pureposely fail, because that way , you can't actually know if you would have succeed if you really tried.

You can keep living in this little fantasy that "If I really tried, I could succeed", the fear to have that last illusion shattered is one of the biggest roadblock to pass over.

Trust me, as a class skipper, you don't need much to be "motivated" to do so. The simple suggestion, a cloud in the sky, that new episode that came out and that you want to stream now. Anything will do the trick, with a good oll "I can start doing thing seriously tomorrow" to cement it.

Anything rather than going back to the classes you have skipped since weeks and that make you face how far behind you really are.

I'd be fine with it being a fear, but I think it should've come up before the big reveal. Here Joyce mentions it, and Walky doesn't have any real response. He's upset but not actually shaken, like to the degree Joyce was shaken when warned Dorothy would be upset about her trying to change Ethan.

Anon, current strip IS showing us that. Not everything need to spelled. especially has the tiemlapse is really slow in DoA, no need to be any olonger when it can be to the point.

Not to mention, it's a clear case of "character acting strange but we get the explanation for his motivation later".

It all comes off extremely incongruous to me with the revelation with Dorothy where he was crying.

And while I'm sure the motivation will be revealed later, since it's regressive behaviour, I'd rather just see him regress linearly and have some hints of his emotional state and motivations. I doubt the reasons are going to be that new or interesting, anyway so it's not going to be a satisfying reveal. Actual proper characterization instead of extreme goofiness would be way more enjoyable for me.

The thing is Mike's been bi for quite a long time now, though it's been understated, and his first instance of bisexual behavior was sleeping with Ethan and Amber (in the same night at the same time somehow) for the sake of fucking with them.

Basically, seeing it as "he's manipulative because he's bi" is a misunderstanding of his character. He's manipulative because he's Mike. Hell, he's probably only bisexual because it allows him to be more manipulative.

This is where it gets weird, for me. Him being bi so that he can fuck with people (which seems to be literally how he became bi from a character design standpoint) is a gross misunderstanding about how sexuality works. And Willis shies away from ever explicitly having a character say "Oh, Mike, he's bi." because that would be weird. Especially since for Mike, sex is all about power and manipulation and getting off on the pain it causes.

Like even this moment here has to get couched in being part of his plan to seduce Ethan *and* another possible manipulation. He can't just be like, "yeah I wanted to bone done, no really that's it."

Full disclosure, I generally think Mike is a terrible character in this universe, he doesn't really make sense in a lot of ways that he did in the context of SEMME and Shortpacked!

I'd agree but when it comes to Mike you really aren't supposed to take it seriously. Again the first time he did anything bisexual, it meant sleeping with Ethan at the same time as he did with Amber (I think the end panel of that comic was them comparing notes to figure out how it happened)

Of course, DoA is SUPPOSED to be more grounded, but you know how that goes.

Like, college schedules aren't light, even as a freshman. You're taking at least three or four classes a semester, and you don't have much time during the week to yourself.

Maybe, but not all classes are one hour in length, nor would a schedule be so even. Some students might have two days out of five free, while other students might be packed from start to finish.
Hell, when you're a freshman, you usually have to meet with an adviser to talk about what classes you'd want to take and help you with a schedule that fits your overall study course.

I just feel like Willis doesn't actually care for the class schedule, which is a bad thing to do with a comic that adheres to a sense of being real-time.

Having perused the IU website a few times, it looks like the university has pre-made recommended course tracks for almost all degrees that keep it around the 16-18 hour mark. That might be the case.
I suppose what I find more unbelievable is how a good portion of students seem to all be enrolled in the same exact sections of their classes. If they're freshman general education courses, they're bound to not only be packed but split up across multiple teachers and sections; unless this specific section is geared towards certain majors, and unless everybody in the group are in the same major, it's very unlikely that they'll all be in the same random course.

I dunno; I guess I just can't find it believable. Or maybe it's to do with how we've only ever seen them in this single class, and never any other courses. I mean, sure, we've seen different classes, but we've yet to actually really get a feel for what the school week is like for everybody. It's as if there's only one class a day for one hour a day, and after that it's freedom freedom freedom oy.

On some level it makes sense because most intro classes are enormous and people tend to gravitate towards familiar faces, but on the other hand they logically should be spread out over four or five different classes. Sarah logically shouldn't be in the same class as them unless she didn't pass in the prior year and Leslie's WS course is way too small compared to reality.

It's a nice character moment showing a bit of willpower from him that would better served at a later point. It'd have more impact if he went to class, did well on his midterm, then started slacking off again only to recognize what he was doing. According to another anon, there are legal issues with this, specifically the idea that you are not allows to view the scores of other students nor are they allowed to see your scores, at least not without consent.

On another hand, it's just somewhat impractical, at least from my perspective. It's not THAT hard to call out a student's name and pass their paper to them individually.

Snark aside, you're right. This is also not the first - nor will it be the last - grammatical issue. I'd say that any strip as long-running as DoA is bound to see these kinds of things... but...

...Willis doesn't really do the whole 'preview before posting/queuing' deal. So you're going to see a lot more of this in DoA than other strips.

It's probably a by product of his extremely large buffer. He probably just makes a strip, skims the bare minimum for glaring errors, and then just queues it up.

Every math class I've been in (and I am sort of majoring in the subject) let us rifle through all the homework and quizzes for our own. The only time a teacher's personally passed back homework was when the class was a dozen people or less.

Maybe the anon was thinking about a law that applied to high school? Because high school was a lot more stringent about keeping grades private.

It's not so much "genuine interest" as much as it is that there is a smattering of lost potential within DoA that it almost can't be ignored. He almost intentionally keeps his characters regressed and one-dimensional.

Just look at the way he responded to the edits of Becky talking to her father. He thought they removed her personality and made her something out of a Hallmark movie.
