Honestly, it was just hair and makeup. The character designs for SS were pretty unique and I really can't think of any other movie this year that could have competed.

So everyone expects DC movies to be extremely ambitious that could fall short but are potentially award winning while Marvel movies are decent but forgettable popcorn flicks? Makes sense.

I liked the character designs for SS but even I can tell it was just "the comic designs but grimier".

You could make the argument that they won because of Croc, but there were a million better-looking creatures in Star Trek. The panel of old elitists don't give a shit about anything involving special effects, music, comedy, animation; basically anything that isn't about gays or minorities or gay minorities (so they can blindly praise it and virtue signal how Hollywood is the new mecca when it comes to modern morals).

They don't actually WATCH half the movies that get nominated, they just toss a statue at whatever "sounds good".

I mean nothing they've made has been Oscar bait though. It's a very different breed of comic movie than, say, The Dark Knight and it doesn't have the kind of sustained make-up/creature effects you'd see in something like Suicide Squad. Also the scores usually suck.
