Most of the EU writers were hacks, but a decent number of them wrote shit a lot better than anything in the movies.
It'd be smarter for the writers to actually look at the Legends content and base their shit on what worked really well - The Mandalorians being probably the clearest established and well thought out part of the EU, it makes no logical sense why they would be retconned into pathetic ninnies.
