Batman's arc is about him losing faith in himself and his mission. Gotham hasn't changed one bit in these last 20 years of crusade, he only managed to lose people he cared about and the attack in Metropolis showed how truly powerless he is. Batman in his depression, frustration and anger sees Superman as an extension of himself: a guy playing hero and not helping anyone. If he now sees the futility of his actions, what will happen when Superman too wake up one day feeling the same way? Would he decide to rule the world? Destroy the planet? So Batman's pretty much looking for reason to end Superman AND himself.

Remember the dream in the beginning? The bats took him into the light but it was all a lie? Batman there is talking about his life mission, about the bats giving him his life purpose after the death of his parents, and how all of it had been a big fat lie because his crusade hadn't helped anyone. Batman lost faith. With the loss of faith comes the loss of his no-kill code, comes the loss of his will to live, comes rage.

This, of course, perfectly ties together with the coming of Darkseid. In that deleted scene, he prays before Darkseid's church. Zack Snyder's Lex Luthor does not hate Superman. His villainy comes from believing in him the most out of anyone on the planet.

Stands out to me as bad? As much as I LOVE Clark talking about doing the right thing, who matters, and what a newspaper should stand for, it was a little weird for him to be saying that stuff to Perry White as if he wasn't the editor-in-chief of the Daily Planet. Some of Perry's remarks about Clark being a nerd were dumb too. Laid it on a bit thick. All I can think of right now.

I think the movie is really good, I own it and love the shit out of it but I can recognize that it isn't perfect lol.

Well, maybe the term "empty" isn't quite accurate. It's just that their all for their own sake. They aren't subtext, they're just easter eggs. A couple paintings on the wall. a choice of music there, every movie does this stuff but apparently it's supposed to be some sort of transformative statement when Snyder does it.

sure, I just wanted to start a conversation. I think you are right that Perry does lay it down thick, but I also think Perry knows that clark is Superman (hinted at when Perry lets Lois take the copter and when he is reading the newspaper at the end), hence him laying it down extra thick.
And Perry has always seemed like a guy who could take criticisms from his staff and just keep on with his day, but I can see why it would seem out of place in the movie.

well its not just paintings, other movies and songs though, think of Lex's whole speech about demons coming from above and angels from below (why he turns the painting upside down). He is talking about Superman and trying to imply he is evil, and even goes out of his to make his idea true by making an "angel" out of Batman/Zod to kill Superman.
But what he says actually does end up being true in Justice League, where parademons will come from the sky and Superman will rise out of the ground.

There is more that is self contained within the movie if you want me to go on.

Not yet they arent, and the point I was trying to make is that when the galaga scene happens, all the characters know of the aliens coming, but in universe in BvS no one knows that the parademons are real.

But sure, you are right, Avengers had one foreshadow as a joke that added nothing to the movie, while BvS had a foreshadow that doubled as a character's motivation and opinion on another character. And it had a whole thread worth of foreshadowing.

Thank you for proving my point. Without the knowledge it's a JL movie, the story itself fails to explain key details.

Diana shows up at Lex's party (apparently invited?), "snoops" around poorly, steals Batman's drive, returns it, is shown to be looking for a picture of herself from 1919, and then tries to leave on a plane (why the fuck is Wonder Woman flying coach) but then shows up in the fight in full armor with shield, sword, and glowing lasso. At what point does what precedes that arrival set that up?

The Flash powerpoint was shown after he appeared in the dream and even then it's just shown he moves fast, that doesn't dictate anything. Both these moments are integral to the final sequence against Doomsday and yet neither are even explained in the slightest.

Excuse you? From Episode 4, the very first in the franchise, it's called "The Empire", and then we see the leader as the Emperor, which Vader calls Master, not Emperor. That's perfectly set up. Boba is hired as a bounty hunter in Episode 5, this is a distinct chronology. That's establishment, and fulfillment.

No because that's the reverse order. The super soldier serum is established in Hulk and elaborated in Cap. It is established as a prologue of "this much is necessary to know what Banner was trying to do", hence its effects when it fails. We don't really need Doc Frankenstein's entire backstory for why he wants to build a corpseman, a few details are fine. Premise is separate from the rest of the execution. Things excluded from the premise need to be established or explained in order to ground them within the rest of the world.

We get no details for who the Flash is, why he appears in this dream, how he appears in this dream, what Diana is and how her living a hundred years unaging is related to her fighting with a lasso, or any of that. Despite these being pretty fucking integral details.

It's like in Legend of Korra. Amon using bloodbending to block bending COULD be rationalized given the details we know about how bending works, but the story completely ignores any attempt to explain it. A story is a finished product, when you buy a sweater you don't get a ball of yarn and needles. At the very least the important details to the plot need to be explained otherwise it fails as a cohesive story.

Watched this for the first time last night. I have to say, I don't quite understand all the vitriol that's leveled at this movie. I heard such bad stuff that I expected to be repulsed, but I thoroughly enjoyed watching it.

Here are some things that stood out to me:

The beginning of the movie is a bit of a slog. It's easy to see where it's going, but Bruce, Clark, and Lex all get roughly equal screentime across individual plots that only cross over occasionally. It's not inherently a bad thing I don't think, and I'd need to rewatch it to even decide how I ultimately feel about it, but it jumped out at me as something that might put off other people. It's an unusual approach for a superhero movie (especially one that flaunts Batman v Superman in its title) but I have to commend Snyder for aiming so high.

On the matter of Lex: Is he supposed to be charmingly despicable, or just downright unlikable? Up until the bombing scene I was having a hard time figuring this out but I settled on the latter. It's markedly different, yet not inherently a bad take on the character, but I'm not sure that Eisenberg was really getting the point across.

Everyone else did a fantastic job though. I didn't much like Man of Steel but I liked Cavill then and he has really grown into the role wonderfully. Affleck did a great job as a paranoid Batman reacting to such a game-changer, and I'm interested to see what he brings to more Batman-focused material. Jeremy Irons fucking KILLED it as Alfred. Easily my favorite side character. Lawrence Fishburne and Diane Lane were great as well. I didn't mind Amy Adams this time around but I was not impressed by Gadot as Wonder Woman.

Ultimately I found it to be quite a beautifully shot film with a lot of thought-provoking subject matter in regards to how the real world would react to suddenly having a Superman around. And keep in mind this is all coming from someone that company warriors would deride as an "MCUck" or some such.

Isn't Batman similar to Achilles in that he treats Superman with cruelty more than is necessary when he throws him around with his grappling hook? Kind of like what Achilles does with Hector's body.

one of the big things in greek tragedy is the fatal flaw of the characters leading to the unavoidable tragedy. That didn't happen in this? Batman and Superman were just assholes who didn't talk to each other until they found out their moms had the same name and then they teamed up to fight Doomsday with Wonder Woman. It doesn't come across like a natural character choice for either of them, just bad writing.

Like if Batman killed Superman then found out about MARTHA i could maybe see it. or if Superman trusted Lex and that's why he died or even if Superman trusted Lex and gave him DNA and that's what caused Doomsday.

Batman was pretty hopeless about his situation and externalizing his problems on Superman with his anger and actions to "put things to right" slowly making him turn into the man that killed his parents. Throughout the whole movie you've Alfred trying to stop him, but he just won't listen. That's why Lex manipulated him so easily. Lex just had to make Superman look reckless enough to justify Batman's own fears and actions.

Even Lex in his bid of power and retribution fell because of his own neurosis and inadequacies. He, like Batman, externalized all his fears and issues unto Superman and justified his actions based on it. He pretty much orchestrated his own downfall because of his mad quest.

I would like to point out as well that Superman fatal flaw was his relationship with Lois, which later is turned on its head to be his strength, said strength that give him the resolve to sacrifice himself for her and the planet. It was his connection to Lois that gave his secret identity to Lex, that made him fall into Lex's trap, that created the whole mess with the congress because of what happened in the previous movie which also came about because Lois involvement, that brought his attention to Lexcorp, and that ultimately made him sacrifice himself.

Nah, i think the kryptonians were just prejudiced and domineering. They had the control over the codex which determined the bloodlines that would be born and they had the controll over the technology that processed how new babies would be formed. They didn't want any mixing or splicing or whatever with any alien form, thus Doomsday.

i don't think the movie in any way adequately portrayed that. For one thing we've seen versions of Batman fall into depression about his mission and turning into the Punisher is not his reaction. (DKR, Batman Beyond where he quit bc he almost used a gun)

I mean that quote says the movie is about batman losing faith but then argues he's already lost it and that lets him be manipulated??!?

I can't really argue about Lex except that's like classic villain shit, hell both Avengers movies had similar things. It happening to the hero is what makes a tragedy a tragedy.

The circumstances are different, though.
In DKR he stopped being Batman because he was getting old and failed his partner. It was about him not being good enough anymore to be able of being of any help. Later he came back because the US had become THAT dire. He was compelled to do something because no one was doing anything.
In Batman Beyond he stopped again due to his old age. He was relying more and more on technology and his heart just wasn't being able to support the strain. He almost got desperate enough to resort to a gun.

In both stories he can only blame himself for his failures. In BvS he has Superman to use as a scapegoat. That's why it took the attack on Metropolis set him off.

The quote there said that Batman was already losing his hope on himself and the good he did in Gotham, if he ever did any good, but that it took the attack on Metropolis to truly show how hopeless and small he was. How insignificant his his desires, his lofty goals, his actions had been. But still that whole thing wasn't enough. What truly kept fucking him was seeing Superman constant fuck-ups on the news. That's what gets to him. It doesn't matter if it was fabricated. He didn't knew. The only thing he could see was that there was another hero doing his same mistakes, but the big difference was this one had the power to destroy the world. His people almost did it. So of course he, Batman, had to do something.

DKR and BB are more about Bruce not being able to be Batman due to old age. The question isn't about if he ever did any good, but rather if he can still do some good. It's all centralized on his future potential.

In BvS Bruce isn't that old. He can still perform as Batman. His age isn't questioned. What's put into question by the character himself is if his mission ever helped in anything, if dedicating his life to this mission ever amounted to anything. His own conclusions after MoS is a no. That's why he started branding criminals. He wants to place his mark on the world (or criminals) somehow. Leave something that is permanent. That will truly matter.

The answer comes to him after witnessing the continual fuck-ups of Superman. It's like he's starring at a mirror. The difference, of course, is that this guy isn't Batman and he isn't just fucking around in Gotham. This is Superman and he's operating on a global basis. The other kryptonians almost managed to wipe out the humans. What will happen when Superman get tired, like he did, and decided to leave his "mark" or just plain lose it?

So for Bruce taking out Superman before that can happen is the answer to what he had been looking for to give his life some meaning. To justify all the years of sacrifice. Not only his, but of the people around him. He'll truly save the world in that way. His life will matter.

Batman's arc in this movie was one of my favorite takes on Batman.

Movie was horseshit. Completely missed the point of Superman, Lex, and Batman. Forced Lois to be a central player, instead of, I don't know, FUCKING WONDER WOMAN, who was hamfisted in the most ass backwards way into the plot. No reason to care about secret asian mercy graves. Killed off the most iconic superman character next to lois, in a vain, autistic attempt into edgelord humor. Unnecessary juxtaposition between scenes and within themselves having (somehow, someway) an even more gaudy self-gratification of the director's "vision" without the slightest hint of self-awareness, and look at that, I haven't even touched the juvenile, sad excuse of a college level "story" yet.

Batman wasn't aware that the criminals were being killed in jail because of their marks. Lex Luthor was the one paying criminals in jail to off those with the marks to make Batman look even more crueler.

Batman also only started to murder after the capitol bombing, that's the moment he jumped out of the precipice.

He blamed himself for not paying attention to the wheelchair dude, his old employee and one of the victims from the Metropolis attack, and he blamed himself for not acting sooner in regards to Superman (because now his old employee had just killed himself taking with him tons of innocent in his attempt to get revenge on Superman. He took all those deaths as his fault.

So that's what made him lose and decide to get the kryptonite as fast as possible without worrying about anyone on his path. That's when he discarded his no-kill code for good. He was now rushing against time and had to kill Superman as soon as possible. No more sitting around. No more waiting.

The DC Cinematic Universe doesn't seem to be built to last forever, though.

I honestly don't understand why people have a problem with characters like Mercy dying. It's not like she's supposed to be alive and there in almost every movie forever like in the comics. The comics are built to last for fucking forever bar the usual reboots, but i doubt that the people doing the movies are expecting this to last like that.

Sure, complaints about a character being misused or not used to its full potential are valid, but being surprised that characters, specially minor characters, will die will movies is a bit naive. Specially in action blockbusters were people expect people to die by the bunch.

Basically, you as the audience get to see him for how he really is.

Good review though. I'm glad you gave your honest opinion. I feel bad that /co/ has devolved so much that it's become rare to see this. I'm glad you enjoy the MCU too but I doubt I'd call you an MCUck for it. I like the MCU too sometimes.

unless you're somebody who believes killing is never justified in any situation - i.e. an idiot - then superman was justified in killing zod in man of steel. there was no alternative. either every single human being on earth dies, or zod dies. one or the other.

Basically, and i might be wrong with this because i'm paraphrasing the interview, Superman and Batman putting their differences to team-up against Doomsday, Superman's sacrifice, and Superman's influence on Batman who's much more optimistic and hopeful taught Wonder Woman that there are still men willing to put their self-interests and issues to come together and do hope.

If Superman sacrificed his life for the mankind despite everything and even managed to redeem Batman, then she, Wonder Woman, can't keep continue in hiding. She can't slack off anymore. It's time for her to do just as good if not better.

There wasn't much talk about Aquaman, but Flash is basing his whole life as a super-hero on Superman's role-model.

I mean, i know i'm alone in this, but i loved how he was portrayed in BvS. I want to see this more fanboy-ish and hopeful Batman, because i love when Batman's going all Jimmy Olsen on Superman, but i fear that they won't deal with his character change with the same level of care and intensity they did in BvS. They'll probably just show a more cheeky and optimistic Batman and that is. Not sense of guilt, no sense of atonement. No musings about Superman. Nothing.

No that is outright false. Atlantians and Amazons were the guardians of humanity, and Diana is the Jesus. Snyder accidentally transferred the Jesus metaphor to Diana when he made Zeus into Abraham's god. Diana is the Chosen One, not Superman.

Yeah that was something I noticed, there were some neat scenes in there. That kind of heavy alternating focus on the three main characters was very different, which is probably what made the flow seem odd. Thanks man. I was hesitant to up an start a thread since the state of things around here is so ridiculous lately. When I saw this one I was eager to share my opinion. I appreciate the response.

As far as the MCU and DCEU(?) go, I can understand why people would prefer Marvel's (honestly) kind of family films to be more serious and I can also see why some would like DC's entries to be more light-hearted. Me, I just try to judge things as they are rather than what they could be. Benefit of the doubt an all that.

Mostly I wish folks round here weren't so keen to jump straight to shitposting.

As an experimental arthouse film, it is fine. But it would have needed to have a budget a third the size of what they got.

But the greatest problem is the goal of the director. Why did Warner want Snyder to create the DCEU? To eventially create the Justice League movie and make Avengers money.

That's where Snyder tripped up. Snyder has an idea of what Superman he wants, but he didn't put in mind that Superman will very soon become the leader of Justice League. Snyder did not bother to make Clark Kent a leader at any point, because that wasn't what Snyder wanted. It is directly contradicting Warner's demands, and that is why we end up with Batman forming the Justice League.

Snyder did what he wanted, and he failed in the task he was given. Superman, as one of the other posters admit, is now just the poster boy who would not be allowed to make decisions when the REAL adults are speaking.

Superman hardly make the decisions in the comics, though. In yhe N52 JL Batman calls the shots with Green Lantern doing his best to undermine him. Superman is just there as a heavy hitter or to control his wacko super-powered girlfriend.

Like Batman is shown in a jesus image in his dream to show that he thinks himself the sacrificial savior of man. Superman is only visually compared to jesus when he gets nuked in space and when he sacrifices himself to kill Doomsday to show that thats the impression he is leaving on these people, one of sacrifice to prove his good intention to the people who dont trust him.

He suffered a heavy dose of PTSD when he went to stab Superman with the spear, because the situation reminded him of his father's last moments before death. Superman was down on the floor weak and bleeding while uttering Martha's name the same way his did right before dying. That gave him pause. Then right after he got very angry at Superman for saying those words and playing on his memories. It was only after Lois had shown up to protect Superman and explain the situation that Batman calmed down. Basically the whole moment served to make him realize that he had become like the man who killed his parents.

Bruce blamed himself for the capitol bombing because the his old employee was pointed as the culprit. An employee that was one of the many victims of the Metropolis attack and that he hadn't payed much attention to. So his suicide bombing and all the lives he took in his attempt to get even at Superman, which was Batman's job, fell on Batman's already heavy shoulders. More deaths caused because of his powerlessness and Superman's fuck-ups.

The characterization and the setup are all shit.
Why didn't Supes hang around after the bombings to literally fly the injured to hospitals faster than any ground vehicle could make it through traffic? Why would he be saving people if he was the one who supposedly bombed them? Why would anyone think a simply bomb would even hurt Superman? That doesn't even work as a reason to think a dude would suicide bomb him at a hearing in the capital.
And again why is Bats killing humans to 'save' other humans from Supes?
There's the question of how Lex knows Bruce is Bats and Clark is Supes I suppose to even know to set up the check returns and shit, and how he isn't going to tell anyone else in the world about their identities now that he's in prison and still vindictive about them and all.
Fuck here's a question why didn't Lex just reveal Supe's secret identity just to fuck with him trying to live a carefree life of a shitty reporter?

I think it was more than just realizing that Superman was a "man". Batman realized that Superman was more heroic than he was. The whole movie Batman's externalizing his own issues unto Superman. He's going after him with murderous intent because of his paranoia.

Meanwhile Superman was unwilling to kill Batman to save his own mother and was ready to give his life up for Batman if it meant Batman could rescue his mother.
