And for seven or eight hours, I don't exist. Since nobody knows whether I am alive or dead because I am inside a closed room and I don't interact with anybody, I am 'dead to the world'. For seven or eight hours, my consciousness, the part of me which I consider the 'real me', is simply nonexistent. I dream a few minutes every hour-and-a-half or so, but that's hardly consciousness.
Bottom line: every day, for at least a few hours, you "experience" nonexistence. There is absolutely nothing to fear about it. As Epicurus said: you're alive or dead; when you're alive, death is not here, when death is here, you are not. So what is there to fear?
