Willis has done a very, very bad job of making Mary, his designated villain, actually unsympathetic.

Her original Roomies incarnation served that role a bit better, being a supercilious tag along who's preachy morality lasted until she found someone to drunkenly hook up with, and who hypocritically had an abortion to avoid the consequences of banging some guy.

DoA Mary on the other hand, is self isolating, seems to be focused on her schoolwork, seems to have genuine religious conviction even if they are sometimes bitter and self punishing, and tends to get shat on by people who are almost all self serving jerks.

Mary would make a BETTER PROTAGONIST that Billie. Or Carla. Or Amber.

I don't mind asshole characters most of the time. For a trans-girl she's still cute (probably because Willis can't be bothered to make Carla look remotely like she ever had a dick.) And, hell, I like her style.

The problem is that he keeps either trying her into stories where we have to play her straight (which we simply cannot do. She's a rediculous asshole and should be comedy relief background character at most) and give her angst while still having her keep her "I'm a dick and I love being a dick" personality.

Either she doesn't give a fuck about people and shits on them for fun, or she's super sensetive and crumbles when her identity is called into question. The idea that someone like Carla would be so affected by Mary or Ruth or fucking anyone else seems contrary to her character. Which once again, is because she doesn't mesh well with Drama. At all. If she just skated by for a one-liner every now and again she'd probably be one of my favorite characters.

Willis sucks at this.

I'm also a big fan of how this went from Amazi-Girl tormenting and following Sal to her "saying she's protecting her from [Amber]." So now she's being nice to her to justify that line of reasoning. What bullshit, all Amber ever did around Sal is have panic attacks and run away to change into AG as soon as possible to mess with her. Willis hasn't even showed how Amber views the situation after AG and Sal teamed up. This whole feud ended way worse than I expected, and I expect it'll get shittier before it's entirely over.

You can play Carla straight with the correct touch and by not dwelling on it. Take Mary misgendering Carla. Make it an actual, insulting misgender instead of a vague insinuation. You can play it straight in three ways: you can have it be the crack in her armor and have her withdraw, you can have her roll with it, or you can have her punch Mary in the face.

That's how I feel about the whole situation too. Amber should be the inward take on her feelings towards Sal, and Amazi-Girl should be the outward expression of her repressed anger issues.

Instead, Amazi-Girl is trying to be the primary personality, and Amber is the one set to snap.

This cheapened the moment SO much. Because 1. Ruth didn't help and made everything worse
2. Not giving Carla a chance to stand up for herself made Carla look exceptionally weak.
3. It creates the implication that Ruth just sat by and idly allowed all of this to transgress, from the skating and the glue, and the stomping but suddenly saying a vague implication that she's not a real girl suddenly gets her full attention.

It basically makes every character worse and from this point on they don't ever recover.

Some of his later Walky stuff actually had some decent punch to it, he was willing to mess with strip sizes to get the right tone for a scene rather that shunting everything into the same weekday newspaper strip size, and he focused on telling a story rather than writing what he likes to write rather than bland tripe that he writes to make money and spite his enemies.

The fact that Joyce herself is aware of this probably means she didn't have full control over the rod.

Whereas Sal's control was so precise that she was able to tell it to spare Danny completely subconsciously.

Joyce is kind of an airhead so it makes sense that when it comes to a weapon controlled by thought, she wouldn't be as good at using it, since she's not very good at thinking in general.

Sal and Mary are the only characters to notice. Not even Joyce, who often puts her foot in her mouth about people who are different than her like this said anything about her appearance/voice. Part of that could be that Joyce is polite enough not to mention anything regarding appearance, but she hasn't even commented on her height which is a fairly benign statement (and what the discussion that Sal knew was focused on).

It seems pretty clear to me that he has no interest in exploring the idea of passing like he is with the idea of racism between minorities or gay issues. (I'm not saying he's doing a good job with that stuff, just that he has tried with those and not with gender passing)

By dropping some sort of other reason for Mary knowing, like her eavesdropping on Carla, he could completely avoid the issue.

More importantly than all this, by doing that, he could make sure his audience knows Carla is trans rather than dancing around it to avoid offending people. He could've even just had a positive moment with Carla and her family that made it more clear.

To be fair to trans people on the whole, trans males tend to get deeper voices when they get testosterone, and it's almost impossible to hear any traces of femininity if the transition is done well (which is usually is for trans males).

There are also some undefinably trans people who alternate what gender they go by, and their voices are only a giveaway 50% of the time.

Most of the trans females I know (and are friends with) are ones I know online, so I haven't heard them speak. The one I have heard speak uses a falsetto that works all right because she has a 4-octave voice and can sing in a ridiculously high soprano as well as a ridiculously deep baritone.

Also, it's very much not a thing whether or not Billie knew before Ruth told her. Ruth mentions Mary "gleefully throwing transphobic slurs at Carla." Billie responds by saying "What?" but it is not expanded upon at all.

I don't have any issue with trans*, and I understand there is a need for secrecy and for people to be in control of how their identity gets out if it does. But a lot of the way Willis does it, treats it as though it's universally a dirty word. But it's really not. Some people react negatively, some neutrally, and some positively, and what I've gathered is you share with the positive ones in private. And, heck Carla may not want to share with Sal, but I'm sure she does with her family. I dunno, it's weird.

It's for that reason why I don't find Claire from QC very inspiring. And Carla's basically the same character.

1. Any "Good" characters refuse to call attention to it, even in sitiuations where it feels unrealistic to not mention it.

2. "Bad" characters only use it as a fault vaguely and don't really build on it in any significant way, so as not to trigger them

3. They have GREAT lives surrounded by friends and family that love them and yet they constantly reference how HARD life is for them. The good ol' tell don't show method. So far the WORST thing we've seen happen to Carla due to being trans is that someone rudely said she was a boy.

4. Barely anyone has questions (I'd argue that Claire is slightly better in this regard because Marten at least asked...a couple questions). But everyone just...accepts trans people, calls them their preferred pronouns and doesn't for a second have any questions or have any difficulty accepting it or have followup questions. Everyone (barring "bad" characters) is just immediately understanding, accepting and have no inquiry.

It's the laziest way at representation, especially for a group so specific and unique. It's like saying "I love Mexico" when you really mean you just love the food and music and don't give a shit about them as people.

This is a better example of "appropriation" than white people rapping or something. You're literally taking a minority and using them to gain sympathy points but not developing them as a character or delving into what informs their decisions beyond the most BASIC version of discrimination.

And it's sort of a combination of self-esteem repair and being seen as normal. Basically, if you're not cishet, you've lived most of your life feeling like you're a freak of nature because the majority of society and modern media and such focuses on sufficiently manly dudes making out with sufficiently feminine ladies. So stuff like 'gay pride' and 'trans pride' and such functions as an antidote. Basically saying 'yes, you're a dude who wants to suck a dude's dick, and you're not bad for wanting that' or 'yes, you want nothing more than to identify as a dude for the rest of your days, and you're not bad for wanting that'. Ideally, things'll move into a sort of society where sex/gender weirdness is considered sufficiently less weird, and then trans pride will be much less prevalent because there aren't as many bad feelings that need to be reversed. But until then, LGBT pride functions as an intermediate step that'll become less important as the movement grows more successful. Like the tail on a tadpole.

Walky being Billie's emergency contact could have had an emotional impact with a proper setup, but it'd require things to be seeded years ago. I think he could have gotten a decent emotional response, and have it fit what he's shown us before, if he revealed that the Walkertons were Billie's emergency contact instead of her dad.

If Billie wasn't even thinking of Walky until the first day they ran into each other on school grounds, then there's very little reason for her to have put Walky does as her contact.

Her family is pretty hands off so it could be her not thinking they'd care. Or it could be her worrying about them finding out about more drinking infractions. Or it could be a genuine trust in Walky, or maybe he was the only name she could think of that isn't a family member. She would have to be pretty sure that Walky wouldn't contact her family about it, though.

I don't expect we'll find out more about it any time soon.

I think there are two reasons:

For one thing, Willis loves to commercialize his work: books, magnets, miniatures and plushes (I think), porn comics, and the ridiculously overpriced Kickstarter rewards. He makes mad dosh on this (literal) shit. So if Watterson, a respected artist whose work is almost universally adored in a way Willy could never achieve, says commercialization might not be a good thing and could compromise ones happiness and integrity, someone like Willis could easily perceive it as an outright attack on himself and his work. ESPECIALLY someone like Willis.

For another, Willis (and his fans, who, as expected, were for a large part supportive of the parody strip) have their heads stuck straight up their own asses. As such, taking a quote like Watterson's and going through mental gymnastics to make it out to be naive or foolish for the sake of appearing clever and thoughtful (while also trying to bring a well-respected person down to their level) is straight up their alley.

tl;dr- Willis is an actual sell-out and he knows it, and he thinks he's much more clever than he really is.

bad dragons are expensive, but super high quality. I'd avoid the butt-styled ones, in my experience they're a bit too tight around the entrance.

Also, I tried getting their lube, but it was basically water. I think they mixed it really wrong.

Fleshlight brands are really nice, and you can vary their tightness.

In the end, you're going to pay for quality. a cheap penetratable feels cheap, and in my experience they split/burst really easily.

If this truly is as you say, an actual proper way to do it, is to take the same quote, and then draw a hilarious misinterpretation of it. Or steal (or closely mimic) the drawings and put a completely out of place quote in like most Zen Pencils edits do. That way you're pretty clearly satirizing ZP's work. Instead this just seems like a weird Watterson strawman and slam. with no fucking context.

Also, while I'm not a fan of ZP, the comic isn't saying that Watterson thinks you should hate your advertising job and quit. It's just a single case, (probably the artist, since I hear he's a stay at home dad), where he found his job unfulfilling *and* his wife had a nicer job *and* he wanted to stay at home with his daughter. That doesn't mean that's the only possible takeaway.

And with how Mary looks, she obviously comes off as scheming. But what would she even scheme about? The way things played out, Mary is being set up as the mastermind behind herself being insulted for her religion, being smacked in the face with a pie, being socked in the jaw by Billie, and being shunned by everybody else on the floor.

But hey, at least we'll get to see her smile within the week. There's always that to look forward to.

The fact that Mary's first use of her acquired info was a reaction to Carla's harassment and Ruth's conveniently-late intervention makes her even less villainous.

It's just an awful, botched subplot overall. Even more so retroactively, when he basically ignored everything that happened and decided Mary engineered the incident specifically to... what was it, misgender Carla so she could gain leverage over Ruth and thereby destroy her happiness? Yes. Mary has a time machine that she uses to save scum her actions in order to inflict the maximum amount of pain on others. She's long since grown used to needing elaborate and seemingly unrelated events to come to pass in order to create an optimized outcome.

Speaking of which, he says it'll be later this month or early in January. Unless I read that wrong, and it's late January/early February when it launches. Not that he really NEEDS to do a Kickstarter, since he makes enough every time that he could probably sell preorders for the books and make enough to cover the initial printing costs.

Functionally kickstarters like these are preorders combined with market research. You get to cover the cost of books while knowing the exact minimum of demand while being able to gauge interest for additional books through lesser donations.

I'd say the sixth one could be a new pic of Carla and Mary facing off like it's a showdown, with a pie in Carla's hand behind her back. Not an exact recreation, but it shows that there's some sort of altercation and that someone is gonna trick the other. If you really want to do the 2 layer thing, put Ruth and Billie looking co-dependent, sad and/or broken up in the foreground. You could honestly do fine with just one illustration.

Third book is a little harder, the title refers to being suicidally depressed while Billie tries to convince her she can fix everything. It's a pretty abstract thing to put into images, and is a pretty small kernel of even the Billie Ruth dynamic. Maybe have Ruth puking into a garbage can while Billie cheers as if everything's fine? Not sure what the rest would be cause I don't remember what else is in that book. I think Joyce's gay panic?

Honestly it's pretty hard for me to think of cool covers for books that are mostly just close-ups of characters talking.

This one is kinda decent. The title is one of the most throwaway lines, but it conveys that it's taking place at a school, that the people don't know the layout, that there's snarkiness. And the illustration actually put in some effort.

Doesn't really convey any deep ideas about what's going on in the book, but it kinda works.
