Was there a time where cartoons overall sucked?

I remember years ago when I was on Newgrounds (Note to self, check out Newgrounds again), how whenever the subject of cartoons came up, the subject tended to be how much they sucked at the time in comparison to the 90s.

Now, today there really is a good selection of cartoons, and only those who can't take off their nostalgia glasses cant see that things are pretty decent right now... BUT, at the time, was that a true statement?

Was there really a dark age of cartoons between the 'regular show/MLP/adventure time' modern era and the 90s/early 2000s? Or were people just nostalgia fagging over Beast Wars and whatever?

The only "dark age" of animation in the mid-to-late-oughties was for Cartoon Network - the ATHF Boston bomb scare (google it if you don't know) led to the blame getting thrown further and further upstairs until some higher-up got replaced by Stu Snyder, who used to be /co/'s favorite whipping boy. The old Cartoon Cartoons were fazed out, and they promoted cheaper alternatives like Canadian flash cartoons or "CN Real", their short-lived foray into live-action programming/reality TV.

BUT, that having been said, there were still other good-to-great cartoons airing on other networks at the time. Hell, while CN was having their meltdown, Avatar The Last Airbender was airing on Nick. So no, the "cartoons just USED TO BE BETTER" argument was always bullshit.

The ATHF guys made light (heh) of it later with an episode of their show... which was never completely animated nor aired because the higher-ups pulled the plug. Fortunately, it leaked earlier this year.

The latter half of the 2000's was actually kinda shit yeah, CN was slipping even before the bomb scare. AtLA was GOAT, of course, but in terms of more conventionally comedic animation Nick wasn't doing too hot either.

Disney Channel is notorious for its emphasis on teencoms then, but ironically they ended up doing the best cartoon-wise because Phineas and Ferb goddammit just release more Milo Murphy already.

Well, I guess you could say the 70s and early 80s were some of the worst years for animation.
So many bullshit regulations pushed by moral guardians looking to "protect" kids ended up leaving animation in a tight spot. Plus, at this time, animation wasn't seen a very profitable to TV execs, so most TV cartoons had to cut a fuckton of corners just to make their shows be profitable enough not to have them canceled by the executives running their show.
If it wasn't for all that, Hanna-Barbera, arguably one of the biggest Cartoon providers at the time, was pumping out animated shows for just about anything. the Fonz from happy Days became a fucking time traveler, the Three Stooges became super heroes, Tom and Jerry became friends, etc.
Yeah, kind of a shitshow.

literally most television cartoons prior to the 90s and that's due to no creative control and shoestring budgets. If they weren't trying to sell you toys they were ripping off Hanna Barbara.
