I can't remember the last time I read a western comic that had non-rectangular panels, though I'm sure they exist. Obviously, the whole image of it is skewed by superheroes being considered basically the entire western industry, while the meat of what people who are interested in comics in general being much less popular and well-known, whereas Japanese comics are varied enough that it's not weird to find someone who likes series that are specifically romance or specifically action (since hero comics also try to be everything all at once).
I couldn't get past the first chapter of Watchmen because of the paneling when I first read it, but now I appreciate it much more BECAUSE of its uniformity. You could also posit that western comics suck because they're copying the basicness of Watchmen without understanding that it wasn't squares that made the panels good.
