>>87913991>Stemming from the pilgrims thanking the indiansThat's a very modern, and wrong, interpretation of Thanksgiving. Maybe the pilgrims SHOULD have been thanking the indians (Squanto specifically), but they weren't. The pilgrims were very devout Christians. They were thanking God. They were thanking God for lots of things, pretty much everything, including for sending Squanto help them.
Squanto, was also a Christian. In 1614, Squanto was kidnapped by an English explorer and sold in as a slave in Spain, where he was liberated by monks and
wu-lu-lu converted to the Catholic faith. He made his way back to North America, where he encountered the Plymouth Pilgrims. He taught them better ways to grow maize, and acted as an interpreter for them, since he knew both Native American and European languages.
Squanto later was also kidnapped by Wampanoag indians, and a mob of armed Plymouth settlers went to rescue him. He's sort of like a very helpful, american indian, Princess Peach. He just keeps getting kidnapped.
