If you ignore that, you don't live in a democracy anymore.
Hell, if it was such an obviously bad choice with nothing but bad consequences, why would so many people vote for it? They must have had some reasons. And if you say it was all racists and cowards that voted against, that still means something is so wrong with your country that is shaped so many people like that.
Those politicians were so sure of themselves that they could say "see, the people are behind this. We can are obligated to push this even further" that they outplayed themselves. It was all a political ploy that they used for their own agenda, and they were so convinced that they were right that they didn't bother to address the people against them, but dismissed them and underestimated their numbers. This disconnect between leaders and their people shows something was already seriously wrong with the way things were going.
I'm not saying that the Brexit was okay or not, but this whole thing is just a consequence of poor leadership, not the people voting per sé.
