Greg was a blond, kinda Charlton Heston looking guy. This guy has more of a Gregory Peck thing going. Not like he'd be the first Foolkiller to seriously change his face, though.

It has a strong hook, makes use of continuity both recent and old. It explains how he went from his stint as Foolkiller to the Mercs for Money to working as a psychatrist while also making it clear that there is more to it than explained here. It establishes two different plot hooks, one with Shield contact and another at the end of this issue. All in the span of one issue.

That is already much better than many of Marvel other #1s this year (e.g. the current Thunderbolts).

Holy shit, I mean, this reads better than most Marvel books right now but I don't know what to say about those references, either part of the style or a lazy crutch.

Like I can see it how a hardass mercenary talking about mundane stuff creates a nice contrast about living as a super criminal vs living like an average person.

I really like how this makes the other aspects of Greg's life the less definite ones. He can move to new things and new identities in his other lives, because Foolkiller is the anchor and the strongest and most definite identity. It plays into capes in general but vigilante stuff especially, and Kurt had some of this too. It gives me hope that his recounting of events may not be 100% too.

Solo's first issue made me think that if you want to do as straight of an action book as that these days, you need to have exceptionally responsive art and plot the fights/sequences in as much detail or else it's too generic. There's not enough of a tonal hook other than that.
