>>87338871>(where at this point both the right and the left treat things like video games as contributing to irl crimes)That's actually a matter of campaign financing, more or less.
Both sides of the aisle get payouts from the National Rifle Association.
The NRA, for reasons no man can understand, REALLY don't want there to be heavier gun legislation and restriction that would curb their profits. This gets hard to explain sometimes, though, when one guy walks into a building with fully automatic weapons and blows away 50 people.
To keep people from asking 'why did he have those weapons in the first place?' there needs to be another easy to swallow narrative instead. A sugar pill of a story that does nothing but as long as they believe in it they won't seek out actual treatment of the issue.
"Video games cause crime" was one of those narratives. Its an easy sell, too, because who doesn't play video games? If the killer had an xbox in his house, bam. Case closed. Look no further, please.
Its a weaker argument these days than it used to be, and so it gets used less often, but it hasn't gone away entirely yet. And it won't, so long as the NRA still has need to distract people from thinking about gun control.
