If you want to talk about a guy who could've been a newspaper cartoonist and decided against it, try Scott Kurtz. He actually aimed for the funny pages for a long time IIRC, until he realized it was an economic and creative fuck and became a vocal opponent of it instead. He had some controversies with syndicated cartoonists back in the webcomics stone age, as I recall.
