It basically became the worst of limewire with other crazies out there ruining it for everyone else.
Scanning for shit back then was awful too. Just took too long and it's enough to give up and head to safer waters, which had newer stuff quicker.
Basically, it's just like today, with people getting onto the newest fad and getting more/newer stuff, until the next big thing hits and the old big hit loses its base.
IRC is still surprisingly as consistent today as it was back then though.
