I didn't like Gundam that much either until I saw "War in the Pocket", which is often considered the most unconventional Gundam series. Otherwise I remember Gundam as

Combination of wasted potential and mediocre writing. Could have been a lot better than it was.
Harlock's character is why I don't like Harlock. He has a similar issue, his entire character exists for the author to wank wank wank a handful of philosophical etc points popular in Japan. Anything they do to make him likable just comes off as inconsistent and high horse as fuck.
He's a pretty good example of Anime character tropes and philosophy tropes ruining shows for me.
