>>86219827I feel like, the thing about Panty and Stocking was, it was never going to be very popular and was never intended to be popular. The show was basically an extended criticism of japanese cultural standards, their image of themselves, their artistic traditions, and the anime industry in general. So, most normal japanese anime fans weren't going to like it, and weaboos who idolize japan weren't going to like it, because its whole point was to be a giant middle finger to everything people treated anime like it was superior for.
Like, just for one example, take the two main girls themselves. They're massive bitches. They're cruel, disgusting, self-absorbed whores who only do anything for anyone else if it either benefits them or gets rid of something that's annoying them. But they're still the heroes! They're still solving problems! They're vulgar and crude, but also bright and colorful and honest and alive! The world is better off for them being around, despite the fact that they're both really unapologetically terrible people! And in the context of japanese culture, in particular, in contrast with it, that means a lot.
On an artistic level, I admire it.
