>>86060750Right on the nose. It isn't that Princess and the Frog or Winnie the Pooh were unprofitable ventures for Disney. Keeping 2D animation releases coming out every two-three years would have been undeniably profitable! But the CGI animated films were making 5x as much money as the 2D animated releases were. It doesn't make sense to have those concept artists and marketers and financiers and producers and directors etc. working for probably the same wages and to just make less profit off of it.
However, because Laika is built on the dreams of a rich kid's son, if those dreams change, or circumstances force him to adopt something that actually makes money, Laika's fate is much less certain. But their next movie is already lined up and it isn't worth really fretting about too much.
However, we should be concerned about the box office receipts for Laika films regardless. A Laika movie performing well in the box office would prove that people want animation that doesn't pander to audiences, take low comedic blows, has artistic merit, etc. Instead we see that people want stuff like Minions, Secret Life of Pets, and Sausage Party.
