The Oscars have recognized animation a lot over the years. They've given a lot of one-off special achievement/honorary awards; Snow White and Toy Story won for being the first feature length animated and CGI movies and Walt Disney as an individual won the most Oscars. The best animated short category has existed since the '30s and animated movies have regularly gotten nominated for best screenplay, song and score, often winning the last two.
I know everyone loves to cite the article with the "fucking obscure Chinese shit" quote, but that's just one shithead voter. I'm not saying Academy members in general care about animation, but I think the people who's job it is do. The Academy as an organization makes an effort to recognize animation and the Best Animated Feature category is a good thing, as far as awards go. Yes, the category is dominated by Disney, due both to popularity and lobbying, but all of three of Laika's movies have been nominated and there's also that Chinese shit that gets nominated every year since it expanded to five nominees, so at least they're getting some recognition. Last year for example, Inside Out won, but two stop-motion movies and two foreign movies were also nominated.
