Pre Crisis Barry hadn't much characterization.
The TV Show Barry is quite like i'm the comics. He isn't the guy who will quip every second, he's someone who want to be a good person, to live up his powers and really doubt himself. He enjoy being able to help people. He's quite a'm awkward guy but is able to go along with most people.

The Brave and then Bold mini serie had quite a good characterization of Allen.

He's a loser nerd who named himself after his fave superhero. But more than anything he is still an adult.

George Miller's aborted JL movie had him pretty spot on. I think he should have been a married man already. Being a family man would have made him different enough.

His death is much better than the things he's done when he was alive. Actually his entire character exists to be killed in the end so his immature sorta jerk-but-means-well partner can take his place.
