>>84084808I read that when you remember something you're actually just remembering the last time you remembered it, not the original event. This is how memories can get distorted, if you always retell a story with a bit of it different eventually you might even believe that yourself.
So, what I've been doing recently, and it might work for you, is when you remember this, don't just cringe internally, just sit there and remember it until you don't feel bad about it anymore. Work through it consciously, it might take a minute or so but it usually works, you can't help that initial first reaction but hopefully the NEXT time it comes up you don't react as badly, and then you just keep doing that.
Perhaps it's just wishful thinking but it's been helping me a good bit the last few months, slowly working through all my shitty memories.
