It's not simply educational ignorance either, but that these people have seen the lesser benefits of EU membership directly. There's, in the end, an optimistic delusion that by leaving the EU, they can better their positions by turning away from the principles of joining which have not obviously affected them. Of course, they have, the hit the British economy is taking is proof of that. That's going to be felt by all of them, regardless of where they live or do or believe.

A policy of self governance, isolationism, and nationalism, is a poor platform to use for breaking away from something when there's several dissenting parties dragged away with you. Even Ireland is saying they should push for another reunification referendum. Both North Ireland and Scottland voted to stay by roughly the same margin England voted to leave.
