Personally I wondered if they had had some kind of accident like Primus dropped them both on their heads after farting them out of his creation matrix, but apparently that was normal for them.
At any rate then it would be a combination of the "thug rapper" style attitude, the evocation of what some considered racist traits in their faces, and the fact that even if they were supposed to invoke the idea of white kids who wanted to live the thug life but were ultimately laughable, the fact that they couldn't look that part given they were alien robots. Unsurprisingly this made it easier for people to see them as supposed to be black guys as opposed to white guys trying to be black guys.
