I think we will see Summer start to take after Rick a bit more next season, and more as the show goes on. Morty is and has been stated to be a moron an incredible number of times, and his usefulness laying in that, and I don't see him as a protege.
Summer? She hasn't shown any super-brains that I've seen yet, but that might just be because she is a vapid teen girl. She DOES have a hell of a backbone though, and has shown an ability to take initiative. She also didn't immediately nope out of further adventures after some bad experiences.
