SU is loved by liberals and their kind. The majority of people don't like any of that. But even if I'm wrong I can see why LH would go beyond SU. SU is one of "those" shows (AT, Regular Show etc.) and they are all basically the same shit. Perfectly interchangable, bland and tasteless. They also all look the same. The Loud House is its own thing and has actual charm.

Imagine a room filled with mice. It might seem that the mice are everywhere and completely dominant, but once a single cat appears they all run away. It's like that.

I know, I know. I hate all of them, Lion King included. Even as a wee kid I disliked anthro animals.

I feel that talking animals are why cartoons will never break through towards more mature stories and adult animation. Yes, there's anthro for adults like say Fritz the Cat. But it's still shit because it's always somehow removed from humanity. It can always hide behind the animul visage. It can and does refuse to be a straight story about people.

Note that there's nothing wrong with making toons for kids, I love them and I'm not pushing for making cartoons a purely adult thing, nor am I ashamed for liking cartoons for kids.

Amusingly I love animals so I can't explain why I hated cartoon animals even as a kid.

The hiatuses tend to kill interest, it's easier to stay committed to something that gives you something new every week at the same time.

So, you have methods based on gathering data from volunteers. Which by default will be stilted towards certain types of people (particularly people with a fetish for exposure.).

I haven't watched Harvey Beaks so I cannot say anything about the show as such. You could say that I feel that we have an overemphasis on cartoons with anthro animals, especially big budget stuff. So in my eyes talent and funds are wasted on that instead of other kinds of stories and characters. Animal stuff is a safe bet, but it has become so safe and so profitable that it's our equivalent of moe blob shows.

For instance the first couple of eps of Star Vs had excellent animation. Then the animators were switched and made to work on some talking animal thing.

But I know I'm farting in the wind. Furry stuff profits both from kids and... well, furries. But I dislike the whole ordeal.

So yes, in the end it's a personal matter.

Talking anthro animals are the groundstone of animation though. Felix the Cat was introduced at the silent film era, then you had Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck etc, and Disney inspired the japanese with their anime scene, and now the japanese are inspiring western creators back. It's all sort of connected but anthro animals are at the heart and birth of animation as a storytelling medium. And you can tell pretty mature stories with anthro animals, if you'd like, Maus is a good example.

The problem with western animation and it's juvenile aspects isn't about the anthro animals, it's that here animation and comics as a whole are for some reason seen as a childish medium, whereas in countries like Japan or France there's a wider readiness to accept that mature stories can be told through animation, that it's not "for kids" just because it's not live-action.

They really probably haven't. Most shows in the past decade (or more) have been strongly story driven or are muddied with over the top fantasy or science fiction. It's rare to see a cartoon that's just so utterly normal in its setting, even considering the cartoon antics.

I kind of want to see now if there's a correlation between older viewers' childhoods and their reactions to Loud House. People who grew up with siblings and happily-married parents seem to understand and enjoy the atmosphere, while only children and children of divorced parents seem to not be as fond of it as it probably serves as a subconscious reminder of what they feel like they should have had but never did.

I know this is just bait thread to rile up fans on either side, but seriously, how can people say the Loud House is a big heavyweight so early in its running?

There are 3 simple reasons the Loud House is thriving right now and all of them seem temporary.

1. It's on Nick and it isn't Spongebob: The obvious reason that I think everyone knows is that it's the first show that seems like it took effort to create on Nick in a long while and Spongebob fatigue has been going on for years. Anything that's not SB is a godsend.

2. It's targeting children like a normal kids cartoon: Compared to the likes of SU and Adventure Time, where the creators and writers know they have a large young adult (16-22) crowd following, the Loud House isn't doing anything new or groundbreaking, it's a fairly tame show that uses the classic cliches both in plots and characters. Nothing about it is new, absolutely nothing. And for kids, that's great since it's a great cartoon to jump on for short bits.

3. It was pretty much airing new episodes almost every day it seemed. I don't think this was a smart idea unless they really had a big stockpile of episodes saved up. Once the new episodes are out and it's running on re-runs like every other show, I can see the ratings dropping hard.

Honestly all in all, I don't think the show will remain as popular as it is for very long. Hell, I'm surprised it's this popular on /co/ at all. The show's the most cliche thing I've ever seen in my life. Characters are classic tropes and the plot is always some moral that's been done before. I mean it's perfect for kids, but the only reason I see it being liked on /co/ is for the waifus. Not surprising really considering that's the main appeal of cartoons on this board in the first place from what I've seen.

They throw on netflix or youtube for them and fuck off to work. It's not the same environment it was for us growing up in the 90s or even ten years ago. Even then, Loud House does have humor only an adult would understand, such as Luna's music references.
It's time for people here to stop dismissing Loud House as generic, pedo-bait, or whatever other cliff notes they've been handed by pro-CN crowd here. Everything about it, from the animation to music to voice acting, feels like something cartoons have been missing for years. Chris Savino has clearly learned from his mistakes and has put together a cartoon that rivals or even surpasses those he supposedly ran into the ground such as old PPG or Dexter.

I watch it and love it and I'm not in it for the waifus at all. It's just a fun show that showed up in an era of cartoons that are all about muh plot, which nothing against plot driven cartoons because I love pretty much all of them, but it's refreshing to see a slice of life cartoon that feels as comfy as The Loud House does. Online popularity just means a lot of nerds sit around and circle jerk over something. And no matter how many unique IPs you see, that number is still dwarfed by the number of kids who come home from school every day and watch afternoon TV.
All people on places like Tumblr and here are just vocal minorities, and not much more. We talk the most, but the kids keep the ratings afloat and buy the toys. That's also why shows like Johnny Test last as they do.

So just be glad it's the Loud House. It's a good show, and I'm glad that our grade school overlords are blessing us with amazing ratings for a solid cartoon this time around.

Yeah, and those references are lost on many people. A good example would be the resurgance in popularity of The Dover Boys, which is a parody of something that I don't even remember the name of. Wow, that's gross that Nickelodeon is able to ride on it's name alone like that even though they've been irrelevant to many fans of animation for years and years. Fans of animation don't make up the majority of cartoon watchers. Mostly it's parents that put the TV on nick to go do other stuff and keep their kids out of their hair for a bit. Spongebob has Mickey Mouse level recognition at this point so everything else on the channel can ride on that.

Nickelodeon is on cable in more areas than CN too. Here in MD we didn't get CN as a cable channel until I was in middle school. The only reason I even knew it existed was because we had satellite TV when I was younger. I love Steven Universe personally, but I feel like they're backed into a corner with this show. Even if the show is a financial failure, so many adults like it that if they got rid of it the backlash would be real. They'd lose all the brownie points they've gotten with adult audiences over the years with their plot centric shows. Also, they'd probably get called bigots and slandered by major media publications for that, and they realize this and are afraid to ever axe the show. You'd be wrong. Nick has way more brand recognition than Cartoon Network solely because of Spongebob and the Klasky cartoons in the 90's. If it was Cartoon Network more adults would see cartoons like Steven Universe and Adventure Time and realize even if they don't like the cartoons that cartoons have just as much potential to have emotional depth as anime or Disney movies and we'd see some real change. At the moment though it's just the enthusiasts who see stuff like that.

Because that's not the shit because compared, you dunce. Disney has several divisions and their network division doesn't even come close to Nickelodeon overall as a channel. Nickelodeon is just a TV channel and when they happen to release a movie (Rango, Jimmy Neutron, Spongebob), it does well, which is extremely rare for a TV station to do.

Disney has an entire different logo for their feature film and TV productions because they're basically two different studios at this point. If Gravity Falls released a movie, even at its apex, it still would not have done well because Disney TV reputation does not hold as well as Disney Theatrical Film reputation. Nickelodeon, however, is able to release films based on their TV shows and succeed. Not many childrens networks can accomplish that.

Anon, Nick has had that fetish for bombs much longer and with much more intensity. After the success of the SpongeBob New, New, New, New, New, New Week Bomb in the summer of 07, Nick bassically permiered episodes for all of their toons for the most part in a bomb format. Although it died down sometime in 2011-2012, it has experienced a recent resurgence thanks to the success of Alvin and The Loud House which both aired mostly in bomb formats.

The only reason why CN gets credit for the bombs is because Steven Universe first named this format for airing episodes every weekday by naming their bomb the StevenBomb and at the time Nick began their bombs, animation fans hated Nick's guts.

Yep. The majority of the characters are white, all the humans are straight, the only gay characters are part of a genderless alien race, and Steven's Dad is more competent than his two moms + big sister. Stevonnie is the only iffy thing and only because Sugar supports the trans theory rather than just saying, "Stevonnie is most likely a woman since that's the dominant trait, fusion works like DNA genes" or whatever.

There's really very little progression in the show at all, but because it has a couple of black characters or women looking at each other lovingly, it's hailed as the godsend of what cartoons should be by college students who parrot shit their philosophy teacher says because they think they understand the world's issues.

I haven't been keeping up on AT but I assume you mean her mom's appearance in Stakes, and I'm fairly certain we'd seen a glimpse of her in a portrait before then. They want kids watching so they can sell advertising, otherwise a show is useless. Korra's average ratings went down by over a million with every new season. If only people used this to promote good things. Like sure, kids are idiots, but imagine a world where, at least in terms or kids' entertainment, they weren't treated like morons. Give 'em something to make them think for themselves. Present a debate giving both sides of the story equally, letting the viewer make their own decision. End the episode in a way that sparks discussion. Not just "your view sucks", "nuh uh", "yuh huh", etc.

Obviously, online discussion is still an important metric. It just isn't the only metric, and does not scale well to shows like the Loud House, or Phineas and Ferb, or Spongebob Squarepants.

Because shows with overarching plots tend to have a significant viewer decrease as the show goes on. Avatar and Korra are great examples of this, we all know Korra's ratings were so low near the end they switched it over to online only. This is for several reasons. A lot of people are lazy and don't want to sit through 2 years of what the fuck ever just to know what the hell's going on right now. It's a big part of the reason I personally never got into anything like Homestuck or One Piece, it's just too much to sit through for something I probably won't even end up liking. With an episodic show you can just jump in wherever, if you like it come back next week, that easy. The latter is obviously a lot more appealing to children, for instance I was way more invested in Ed, Edd, n Eddy than Samurai Jack as a kid, which sounds sacrilegious. but I was a little kid and I think Samurai Jack was on past my bedtime anyway. All that being said, man fuck SU.

Not at all. I'm sure that was most of us as kids. I hated B:TAS as a kid, I thought it was boring as shit. Same thing with Samurai Jack and most action toons, really. I didn't enjoy them until I was older. They were slow, had long explanations sometimes, a lot of talking with no jokes to hold my interest as a child. I much preferred Johnny Bravo and Courage over them.

That is partially because ratings for TTG and CN shows in general collapsed after the network decided to allocate over half of its air time to TTG in the fall of last year. Kids thus got bored of the constant reruns and moved towards the app (which was starting to premiere episodes before they aired on TV).

Cartoon Network doesn't really do merchandising outside of DVDs, they more rely on ratings. The only time I've ever seen a toy of Adventure Time in my life was at a convention like 5 years ago. It was a toy of The Jake Suit, only a few days after that episode aired to my surprise.
