RDJ did Tony so well that he redefined what the character was and made people think that's how he himself actually fucking is.

He's probably in the top 3 most talented actors for the entire franchise, in terms of their performance as their characters.

He only redefined the character because RDJ played RDJ and RDJ is more interesting than Tony Stark had ever been before. Heck, RDJ's whole personality works better for the character's history (mostly because they share similar histories) than what had come before, and obviously what has come after with our friendly neighbourhood Bendis.

Probably a result of Ike Perlmutter being cheap. That being said, lesser known actors are often better choices for big roles because they bring with them fewer expectations and can come to define the role, rather than the role being just another quality performance by Big Name Star.
