>>83174368mages seem to be able to provide knowledge and protect others from the negatives of their element by being affected partially yet protected from th full effects of their element
for example, sollux, as a mage of doom, repeatedly saves his friends from doom due to some foreknowledge of impending doom, and hears the voices of the imminently deceased. he dies repeatedly, yet at the end is only "half-dead" and can leave dream bubbles at will
meulin was an expert at mostly averting heartbreak among her friends as the mage of heart, and though she had some rough times with kurloz, she never gave up her faith in him, even though he mind controls her. so she doesn't have a proper romance, yet doesn't feel heartbroken.
so a mage of void would help others avoid being hidden, lost, or feeling useless, while never truly being hidden, lost, or feeling useless themselves. void also apparently relates to plot relevance: both troll void players either inherit plot irrelevance (equius) or have great potential for plot irrelevance (horuss). so you'd protect others from falling out of the story, while never being center stage, yet never out of the spotlight yourself.
as for wacky powers, you'd probably wield void similar to a seer, which would mean darkness/obfuscation, antimagic/secret discovery. i'd consider self-stealth aspects to be more like a magician than a thief/rogue: you can never be truly hidden yourself, but you can hide/unhide other things like how a magician is always visible on stage, but you don't know what part of his tricks are hidden to you,, you just know something is simply by virtue of his being there.
