Call me crazy but frankly I think this show deserves some credit for giving kids some normal, decent characters and situations to experience a sexual awakening to. Better than repressing everything and trying to force a narrative that romance and innocent sexual attraction, especially during adolescence, don't exist down their throats.

Honestly I don't remember if this show was good or not.
The CG sucked though and they repeated thier animations more than most shows I've seen.

Well, 'Merican here, I didn't mind them myself back then, but... now listening again, I think it's moreso that they sound rather "older" than they look. There's torrent of the whole series in what appears to be DVD rips at KAT. The interlacing is pretty bad and the playback is jerky if I play them in MPC for some reason so I have to use VLC, I wish there was a higher quality source available.

Nigga with DHT there's usually more seeds than reported. Also that doesn't even mean it will be slow, I've had fucking lightning fast torrents with only one seed and several leeches before. If it's the same one I downloaded last week (about 24gb) then it only took an evening.

Sissi was booted because she allowed the group to be found out, and only soured things by letting her hunger for Ulrich's cock guide her in ensuring the supercomputer was shut down. However, the gang should have realized sooner that the return to the past undid her mistake and could have been resolved with either a second chance or testing her resolve to keep the secret.

With William, he only acted responsibly a few times, namely in the zombie episode, which really any of the older kids could have done given the chance. The 4th season had several chances to reveal things about his life as the gang planted the "clone", but we never see anything other than his parents being normal parents.

Pretty decent action show that does straightforward plot progression after the first season and even does some character development. When they all get new costume design they all start acting slightly more mature in a believable way. Except for Odd (he has autism).

There's a prequel episode that explains that when we they first found the super computer and Aelita, Sissi was with them. When XANA started his first attack Sissi got her dad and the police involved and tried to shutdown the supercomputer.
So after their first return to the past Sissi didn't remember anything because she wasn't scanned, and they started treating her like shit for selling them out.

They had to get English VA's, in France, for a show they had little hope for doing well in the U.S. Budget was another reason the dub wasn't spectacular. Moonscoop was cheap. Jeremie and Aelita have the same voice actress.

They break Aelita's link with the supercomputer in season 3, but XANA breaks free as well and propagates through the internet so they have to keep using it in season 4 to fight it.

In the proper ending they finish off XANA for good using some sort of multiagent program with the help of Franz Hopper's digitalized spirit, turn off the supercomputer, make amends with Sissy and ride into the sunset.

But the real answer of course is international marketing opportunities. If you've got French, German, Italian (pretty sure Odd is canonically Italian), Japanese and British kids in your show then those countries are going to be more interested in funding/showing it.

Any school where students board there is a private school, you generally have to be. I knew a kid who attended a boarding school near his house and lived at home (like Yumi) and it still cost them over £4000 a term. Live-in students would be paying even more.

It's never explained. The most backstory we ever get behind the time travel is that, in order to reverse time, the computer doubles its processing power which in turn doubles XANA's power...which becomes completely pointless after XANA escapes from the computer.

If I remember right, not only is it never explained, but the guy who built the super computer said he "discovered" its ability to reverse time. Which means not even he knows why the fuck the computer can reverse time.

There were actually a ton more plotholes than this, but yeah, the show made 0 sense.

XANA has also created clones, possesed people and inanimate (non electrical) objects, made a zombie virus... The time rewind is certainly a deus ex machina but you have to assume the supercomputer is pretty much magic and can rewrite reality itself.

They sort of had it hint at its motives in season 1 episode "Ghost Channel", where the "Jeremie" it was masquerading as becomes agitated by the notion that Jeremie could and would go against his fear of virtualization to help save his friends, defying the "logic" XANA believed to be absolute. After that, XANA-fied people usually just muttered some evil shit. William would says some shit, though it was bit inconsistent because sometimes it sounded like William saying it himself (you know, Sith style bullshit), while others it was XANA making him shout things at the gang.

Overall, XANA was just something of a formless entity, with no clear agenda beyond crushing humans. They implied world domination, yet XANA never does anything to try and claim power. Shame really, as it would have been fun to get some idea of XANA's motivations, maybe even show them evolve as XANA learned more about the world and developed as an entity that had transcended a simple AI.

Season 1 was literally made because the network "wanted to air the episodes in any order without worrying about continuity". It was only after the show proved to be a great success that they allowed a more coherent plot and the rest is history.

Bottom line: a lot of season 1 is just filler/nonsense. Jeremie didn't get all retarded and think Aelita just up and pooped into existence on earth. And the gang apparently never had success as a band.

Which is a shame considering episodes like Ghost Channel were great, and only got loosely mentioned later like ONCE. Or that time they joined a knock-off Alien cast. Shame the series will never get a reboot, I'd love to see the more interesting plots of the first season redone but with fleshed out perspectives rather the episodic padding they were.

Well that's disappointing. Those silly one-off episodes were part of the fun, even if they didn't contribute anything to the overall plot. If nothing else, they were good character pieces usually.

Though I suppose some of the stuff like Yumi deciding to tell the authorities about the power plant overloading would be out of character.

Kids found a supercomputer, go to the virtual world, they find Aelita there, they also realize that the supercomputer is making shit in the real world so they decide to fight it, so until they can materialize Aelita they can't destroy the computer.

In the first season they travelled back in time left and right, in second season they realize that each time they jump back they make the supercomputer stronger so they only do it only if it's necessary.

I'd ask for XANA having more background but it just being a malicious as fuck supernatural AI was done well and it remains an amazing villain to me. Maybe the technology having more depth. Maybe Jeremy gets a neat new upgrade to help aid them in Lyoko every so often. Maybe Lyoko is more of a virtual world than a creepy desolate virtual wasteland but that would be getting into anime levels of 'Dude we're in a game.' Maybe another villain. Like some scientist familiar with Virtualization shit who got a job at the school to fuck shit up.

I don't think anon was implying the show was specifically designed to turn kids on (although this is France and I can't really think of any other reason for putting those underwear scenes in) more that there were characters the audience's age who were shown as being attractive and attracted to each other in the context of early teenage first sexual experiences. Rather than just innocent crushes, they were shown wanting to do things like touch and kiss and it depicts those things as perfectly normal. That's pretty rare even today, but is a nice healthy attitude to have to adolescent sexuality.

Sissi was actually a really nice girl. The problem was though that she was more mature than most of the original gang, so when she told Ulrich she had feelings for him, he ended up being a dick to her and teasing her because he didn't know how to reject her while minimizing damage to her feelings. And since Ulrich was the "cool guy" of the group, everyone else started taking the piss out on Sissi as well, which really hurt her.

I'm pretty sure there's an episode where the plot revolves around what would happen if the gang were actually nice to Sissi and included her in their activities, and she ends up being a super sweet girl. The only shows I've ever seen that did the " situations to experience a sexual awakening to" would be the Avatar series (not the movie). And even then it shares anime inspirations so even that would be pushing my quota. I think you're misunderstanding what that anon really meant, he meant the kids in the show had "real life scenarios" when it comes to relationships compared to animu and other fiction making it really scripted and unnatural. Like how Pokemon XYZ is doing it currently actually.

I'm pretty sure they have a few episodes with the girls in swimsuits. At least one in the first season, and a few in the later seasons. Season 2 has at least two instances, one with Yumi and William, and then another with Aelita when she's wigging out.

I'd say it is. It's not quite as amazing an anime wannabe like say Wakfu or Oban Star-racers which felt more fleshed out from the get go and animated better. Still, Code Lyoko is a strange but fun series with its use of time travel (however formulaic it was in the first season and part of the second), a legitimately threatening villain whose motivations and actions were more akin to a force of nature than a typical hang wringing villain, and some great music.

Granted, the art style, clunky CG (which didn't really get that good until the third season, peaking with the fifth), and simplistic plots of the early episodes can certainly be off-putting to those who desire more substantial effort from beginning to end.

I recall a cheesy ship-fic with Odd and her where she joined the team (this was long before the prequel episodes FINALLY revealing how the bullshit began), and gained a sort of butterfly themed avatar. Can't remember all the details aside from something like butterfly wings and I think a weapon inspired by her cheerleader baton.

They were pretty believable for the most part. Ulrich was moody, but what teenaged boy isn't? Yumi was very personal about her Japanese heritage, but never acted like some weeb's interpretation of a Japanese girl.

Then again, it was from a country that doesn't fear showing that foreign people can be just like real people.

Man, I'm glad I'm not the only one who really likes the music. It's very good at pulling an eerie and foreboding atmosphere and the fights in Lyoko have a nice tense feeling to them.

This show also ranks high for having one of the best openings out there.

Early attempts, CL included, were kind of rough around the edges. Now however, it seems they've learned to stop aping the most irritating clichés (sweatdrops, chibi forms for embarrassing/awkward situations, etc.) and just take what's tried and true (tight narratives, varied expressions), but with the French's more unabashed approach to fanservice. Things like CL and Wakfu just do it without always going "Hey look, naked chicks!" compared to how a great deal of anime still treat the appearance of a naked/barely dressed girl as though it's Jesus riding a flaming Segway atop a dinosaur version of the Hulk.

I think its because over here most of the "adult world" doesn't care about the content of cartoons at all, so it isn't as closely policed as america.

Teenagers are also pretty promiscuous and from the informations I have, moreso than in america, so I think the general consensus is that overall kids can handle themselves once they have been given "the talk".

Avoid Tokyo Ai! Tenchi Muyo, and Pretty Sammy unless you have a particular hard on for Mahou Shoujo.
The order is- OVA 1, OVA 2, optionally Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure, GXP, OVA 3, and Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari, the best thing since OVA 1and 2.
Also Kajishima has been releasing doujinshi steadly for the last 20 years, all of them are canon, and some of them are translated. Pic related.

Tenchi Universe is a separate canon, and while recommended, it fucks up all the characterization.

Eh, there were some times it got a bit confusing, at least in the dub. One episode had a mention about a correspondence with France or whatever, which doesn't make any sense if they're already living IN France. Another one I think had them speaking of a political figure using a more common American term than the more proper one for countries like France.

Still, not as bad as some dubs where they outright just pretend it's America and even warp fucking obviously non-American things to "look American".

Only for Mihoshi, really. While Ayeka and Ryoko do lose some of their better traits, they aren't nearly as badly handled as Mihoshi is, who is pretty much dumbed down to be the foil for Kiyone. Which is a shame because Kiyone is great, but got lumped into being the "straight man" of their duo dynamic.

Not really. While boarding schools like Kadic weren't common, it's not the most unrealistic thing. Even then, you could tell it wasn't set in America because of the way they drove cars, the appearance of police cars and ambulances, and the money they used. Not to mention every once in a while, lesser known landmarks would appear, like the factory the supercomputer resided in. The location was based on one where a Renault factory used to be.

Also Washu was presented as more of an egomaniac than a genius with her shoulder dolls. Which is a shame since she's always been my favorite.

I would say Washu was kind of stuck up in the original, just not as insistent on being praised compared to Universe.

Same pretty much went for Tokyo, they didn't really do much to hurt the characters, though the plot of that series was its weakest element. The main villain was just some mopey girl, her lackeys being less interesting than most of Naraku's incarnations from Inuyasha, and just overall feeling like something that could have been a 3-part OVA than a standard 26 episode anime.

Overall though, both were more tolerable to watch than GXP, though I'd say that one suffered more from the wonky animation than anything.

What signal, though? It was pretty clear that it wasn't America just by looking at most of the locations. Yet for whatever reason, the dub kind of stumbled around and made it seem like the setting was in America, at least for the first season or two.
