Really, though, compare, say, Barry to Wally with Hal to Kyle. In the former case, you have an old, but at that point in serious decline, character, going down swinging and saving the entire universe, and passing the mantle on to a popular, well-established character that was then used to develop that character further while still maintaining all the book's core concepts. In the latter, you have the old character going insane, turning evil, butchering the entire supporting cast and universe, depowering a fair number of well-liked characters, and capping it off by passing the mantle to an entirely new character and going on to write a book that completely ditched from the first hurdle one of the biggest draws to Green Lantern (the Corps).
