>>81455094>I'm a horrible cis white man and I believe in equality. By that I mean if I apply to a job alongside a woman, a black man, a MtF and whatever else you want, the employer should take an unbiased look at every application and hire whoever is most fit for the work.>He shouldn't default to me based on any biases he has about any of the others(women have babies! blacks are criminals! trans are insane! etc) but he also shouldn't just rubber stamp whichever tick makes his diversity meter rise.>But alas, I have become an old cis white man because this view makes me a bigot myself. No, this is fair, but a couple of things I want to point out:
1) No matter how unbiased people say they are, they're probably pretty biased; you need concrete protocols in place to keep that bias from unduly influencing decisions.
2) Most jobs don't require the "best" person, they need someone who hits a basic level of competency. Then, other factors come into play, which is where bias can creep in. The problem is that if you let that bias influence you, you might lose out on assets you don't know you could have had. For example, you hire the white dude because he's a better cultural fit (less stress chatting with him over the water cooler, he doesn't have a kid so he can stay later, etc). But what you didn't know is that the Latina chick grew up in a house with an abusive stepdad, so she knows how to placate assholes like your producer while still getting her way. Maybe if you'd taken a chance on her, you'd have found that out, and maybe your bottom line would be better.
This shit isn't simple, that's why it's contentious.
