I'm honestly really not a fan of the killing joke. The only part of the story that seems of worth to read to me is that ending moment between Joker and Batman. And no he doesn't kill the joker.

But besides that it was mostly just shock value shlock. And i'm a fervent lover of Alan Moores work but I feel like this was kind of a pointless story over all. For all the 'wahh sjw ruin everything' complains on /co/ it was an honestly shitty way to treat a character for the purpose of 'driving gordon mad' which never even fucking happened. And it was a big step on the road to the current day super hardcore kill crazy joker. I don't blame alan moore for that. It was the people of lesser talent after him who couldn't think of any other direction to go but the cool seeming one. But if not for killing joke joker, you dont get the sloppy slippery slope leading to 'face nailed on joker' in the dark breaking the necks of like fifteen police officers.

I just never felt like there was much to the story and I don't imagine its going to make a very interesting story on screen either.

It's fucking ridiculous. They fired all the actors and the director and recast it with people from glee and big bang theory and brought on Evan goldberg to direct cos they want superbad style.
Also joss whedon rewrote the script and amanda waller is now played by mellisa mccarthy.

Animation looks kind of spotty. Some of it looks alright. DESU to be honest it might've been better to have it Timm-style. Voice cast seems good, hope they get Robert Costanzo back for Bullock.

This is mostly what it comes down to... the detail of Brian Bolland originals artwork is such that any effort to outright duplicate it for an animated adaptation is gonna fail and end up being far far worse than if you hadn't tried to duplicate it in the first place.

It looks like there's a Bolland slider they keep fiddling with that makes it more faithful to the comic or less depending on the importance of what's being shown, I mean, it's really distracting how much more detailed that final part with Joker laughing with his hand in his head is than all of the rest.

I can see what you mean. Some of the more still scenes are pretty damn good looking and inline with Bolland style, but the action scenes seem less detailed and sloppier compared to the other parts.

Sorta like that new Gundam series except even the worst parts still are good looking

Wasn't there a Kevin Smith podcast where he interviewed someone that said flat out that the Batman killed Joker in that last pane. That's why the laugh just stopped abruptly.

It suits Bolland's style as it is now, maybe. But Bolland's style in Killing Joke wasn't the flat digital stuff he does now, it was the same he was using for other comics colored the same way.

What kills me is that Bolland says the coloring is how he originally intended it, butt here's no way that can be true. Digital coloring didn't start becoming standardized for almost a decade after, and the kinds of tones you could do in inked comic work where vastly different. A 1988 KJ colored by Bolland COULDN'T look the the 08 recolor.

I think it works because the Killing Joke is implied to take place in a world where all those crazy golden/silverage stories happened as well. The Batcave is a fantastical place and should look like so, just like the amusement park.

Hopefully it's not an issue to agonize over, the original colors are far more interesting anyway, and something sorely missed from contemporary coloring styles.

God this commercial gives me such a animation boner. It's so overanimated and wonderful in movement, but the still frames work as illustrations as well.

If they could do this art style with a more restrained animation style... I don't think there are many people trained in the animation field to do this kind of stuff any more though.

I don't know if there's a term for it, but there's this animation style I see from time to time in anime where they do heavy black shadows/pure white highlights and flat colors rather than digital shading. I think that might have made it feel more Bolland-y... it would have at least made it more distinctive.

Moore himself has also commented on the book a couple of times and stated that he doesn't think it's a very good book.

I liked the book's art and it was one of the earliest bat-books I read, but I never cared for its story either. What bothers me the most is that part near the end where the Joker loses his theatrical confident demeanor, appears sorrowful, and there's a moment of connection between him and Batman. That part doesn't feel in-character to me, and the book's resolution feels weak to me because of that.

I suppose it's a cost-cutting measure and they're not putting extra work in unless it's a really important scene. But I'm happy that they at least seem to have made an attempt to make this particular scene stand out. The part where the guy does the maniacal laugh and turns into the Joker was a memorably terrifying moment in the comic, and it looks like it's gonna be like that in the movie too.

Imagine if they had done a mix of this. With the few quick beginning Batman segments it'd resemble the recolor, but as Joker becomes more prominent throughout the book, the 80's coloring starts to creep in like corruption.

Maybe if it was an actual feature film released in theaters with a huge budget. But it isn't, it has a bigger budget than your normal animated TV Shows. Anime Movies are way better animated since those are actually shown in theaters.

I think the Bruce Timm art style really hurts it visually. I get that it's easier to animate and whatnot, but the impact of things get deflated when it looks like a slightly modified BTAS clone. Especially if you nearly adapt the Bolland artwork for certain shots and then go to the Timm style for all the others. It's really jarring and ruins the tone.

This doesn't look any better than any other DC animated feature over the past decade. I'm not even sure if they can properly adapt TKJ without it coming off as a half-assed, rehashed fanwank.

The art looks terrible. It looks like the same stilted animation of a North Korean slave labor camp that I expect from DC these days, and it doesn't have any sense of style of it's own, much less art capable of the surreal, manic horror of the book. And I'm sorry, I just don't feel Conroy anymore. He's capable of better, but their directors just don't seem to be able to bring it out of him anymore.

I guess I'm asking why I should watch this when I can read the book? What's new or innovative to the story that the producers though they could achieve through animation?

On second though, I think it's just the writing. Conroy seemed fine when I played Arkham Asylum, but the dialogue just seems wooden the clips. But then again I don't really hold TKJ in the high regard as everyone seems to, so maybe my opinions are just garbage.

It's funny, Warner Bros. could actually make a small fortune if they wanted to make another BTAS or just any properly animated Batman feature film. I think we've proven that nostalgia for the series is at an all time high and it's not like their live-action features are doing anything special.

I love TKJ because it humanizes the Joker. It gives him dimension. It's not important what exactly happened to him to mold him into the cruel monster he is now, the origin shown in the book shouldn't be taken literally. It's the notion that he thinks some cruel fate befell him which explains to some extent at least the reason behind his actions.

TKJ was probaly one of the few Batman comics that stood out to me for that very same reason, because everyone else lingers on how the Joker is some evil clown dude that laughs a lot and is evil, that end with him just giving up on the whole crazy act and just talking like a normal human being for once was literally the best part of the book, and I'm afraid that in the animated movie it isn't going to be him just saying it honestly, it's going to be him mildly sounding crazy or something

The animation is not even close to "son of batman", "batman under the red hood" or "the return of the joker" (already 16 years old), and those three aren't the best animations in the world but still.
This is weirdly such a low quality of animation to have when working with such expensive voice actors with such an important batman story.

Hey dude, I posted the comparison image and I agree. DC has never really put real effort into making a visually distinct animation for the last decade.

But I think it's especially jarring for TKJ because the original comic had such a distinct style. At least they tried for the TDKR animation to look vaguely Millerish. It's like, if they tried to adapt the Arkham Asylum comic with all its gnarly Neal Adams paintings, but just settled for the inhouse DC animation style. That'd be just as disappointing.

There's no need for the Dropbox stuff. But just for future reference, try Dropbox/MEGA since those sites aren't limited to certain countries. But you need a (free!) account first. Regardless there will be no cops at your door over a leaked cartoon, the site will just remove it.
